Bylsma: I report to Murray, he speaks to ownership

Bills GM Doug Whaley brought quite a reaction from observers Monday when he reminded them former coach Rex Ryan reported directly to owners Terry and Kim Pegula and not to him at all.

"I report to Tim every day, am talking to Tim every day. And Tim talks to Terry and Kim," Bylsma said when asked by The News about the Sabres' structure. "There are times when it's all of us together. I think that's a little bit more on the football side of it ... We have communication with Terry and Kim. But I talk to Tim every day and Tim talks to Terry and Kim every day."

Pegulas seem very much like helicopter parents

if you owned the sabres or bills, you'd want to be involved. I would have an open door policy for the GM. "come to me if needed, but it's your baby." I think it would also be helpful to know challenges and issues coming up in the locker-room. or trade ideas coming through. if you aren't on that, they could trade an asset that you want to see develop. I don't think it's that odd

Problem is, it seems like pegula doesn't give the GM the reins, it seems like he gives the GM enough rope to hang himself while the pegulas make major decisions. Let there GM do his job and reap the rewards

The fact that Bylsma even has to address this is a sign of major organizational dysfunction.

Terry, Kim and and Russ run the Bills. Terry, Kim and Russ run the Sabres.

There is nothing wrong with the owners and GM speaking consistently or even daily. The issue comes up when the GM has his authority/ability to make changes clipped by the ownership.

I don't have the time to speak to my boss everyday... why?

because I'm too busy doing my job.

I speak with my management every day. and I am busy. you have to keep them in the loop of high level stuff that may catch their attention.

There are plenty of different management styles and a good manager adapts to his employees. I have staff that I speak with every day and I have some staff that I know preform better in a more independent setting.

I've always felt NFL teams have more involved owners over other sports. Besides, if those three are meddling in the bills affairs so significantly, it's possible that the sabres are an afterthought to them most of the time.

At the professional sports level... a GM who has to speak to the owner everyday smacks of having an over-meddling owner.

coastal, in fast food, sometimes you either get the fries in the bag in time or you don't. "senior" management typically won't check in with their "right" hires
