TBN Sullivan : Do what the Pats would do and let Gilmore walk

It's a good read with salary comparisons.

The Pats have their financial issues, like any team. They have 13 unrestricted free agents (the Bills have 24), including six starters. Belichick will bid an impassavie goodbye to some key players, as he always does. But they have $65 million in available cap space, an amazing amount for a team that has won two Super Bowls in three years.

My only problems with it are the assumptions Whaley can maintain a talent pipeline, and our coaching staff can use it. It would probably end up pretty embarrassing if we tried using their model.

The Bills have actually been pretty good about letting guys walk rather than overpaying them to stay.

The part they're terrible at is finding replacements who are equal or better.

    As he points out though....

All-world tight end Rob Gronkowski counted $6.6 million against the cap last season. The Bills have Charles Clay on the books for $9 million in 2017. Running back LeGarrette Blount was a $1 million bargain for the Pats. LeSean McCoy's cap figure for next season is a cool $8.8 million.

Alan Branch, a former Bill, was the Pats' top-paid defensive tackle at $2.75 million. Marcell Dareus is a $16.4 million cap hit next year. Jabaal Sheard, the Pats' top edge rusher, cost $6.8 million in cap space in '16; Jerry Hughes has a $10.45 million cap hit. Left tackle Nate Solder, $10.2 million last season; Cordy Glenn, $14.2 million cap hit in '17.

Even quarterback Tom Brady, at $13.8 million, had a lighter cap hit than the $15.9 million the Bills are facing if they kick in that extension for Tyrod Taylor.

New England paid the four members of its starting secondary, one of the best in the NFL, a combined $10.6 million last season. That's a shade less than the $11 million that Stephon Gilmore commanded in the final year of his original contract.
So we might be bad at both.

It's about timing and what's available. Marcellus Whitley said on sports nation that he was being paid way more then Bruce Smith was and was 1/100th of the player.

Tom Brady masks a lot of things of course. But the organization has a way of getting guys to buy in and maybe even take less to be part of the winning culture. They also pay up BEFORE a player really breaks out. Last/only recent time we did that was probably with Aaron Williams?

You have to look at the whole deal to find out about the money spent, maybe all those deals are back loaded in two years when Brady probably gone and they are in cap jail.

Or most of those guys are older and wanted to win so played for cheaper because Brady and rodgers only QBs in the league now and being with them guarantees a shot at the lombardi

NE has a perfect storm cap-wise. They have an elite QB who can (and does) play at a salary way below market value because he happens to be married to a woman that makes like $40 million/year herself. Plus, they're probably also being shady and paying him under the table too.

Brady also makes bank with endorsements, so that helps too.

Well, he gets 14 million for 2017, 22 in 2018 & 2019. But the thing about Brady is he, like most of the Pats, take a discount, and mostly don't mind renegotiating to stay with a contending team.

By the time his 22 million kicks in (figuring just for a moment he keeps playing at a high level), you'd probably see them extend him for a year and convert salary to signing bonus to lower his cap amount. They have the space to do it. If he craps out but still has moments, you'd probably see the same while he bridges to the next guy.

A Super Bowl champ with 65 million cap space atm, has a pretty good handle on things and Brady, like him or not is all about the team.

Never said they do not have their ducks in a row. What I said is in free agency they get discount vets near 30 that Want to win and were released. Try do not sign unrestricted free agents. Bottom line in today's NFL with Brady they do not have too that us my point. He hides a lot of flaws

Comical to think there may be a residual effect of being in the division with NE.

Players sign here so they can audition for Belichek twice a year...

Why stop at 20? This team could rival the Cards and pre seventies Steelers and Redskins playoff droughts and could quite possibly outlast theirs.

In retrospect the re-sign of Aaron wasn't bad as he performed well after his contract minus injuries. I'll also commend the front office letting Jarius Byrd walk as thought it was a gross mistake.

Gilmore reminds me of a Thomas Smith/Nate Clements re-sign as all quality CBs but worth the high cap figure? Probably not as all are great CBs just not elite.

Yep - do what the Pats do.
