Saturday’s NHL draft lottery in Toronto will determine the order for the first round of the NHL Entry Draft in June in Chicago.
The Canucks, based on their 29th overall finish in 2016-17, hold the second best odds of winning first overall — but it’s still only 12.1 per cent.
A few notes on the process: Odds for remaining teams will increase on proportionate basis for the second draw, based on which club wins first draw, and again for third draw, based on which club wins second draw; the 12 teams not selected in the lottery will be assigned selections 4-15, in inverse order of regular-season points.
Odds to win the first-overall selection, as calculated by
1. Colorado Avalanche, 18.0 per cent
2. Vancouver Canucks, 12.1
T3. x-Vegas Golden Knights, 10.3
T3. Arizona Coyotes, 10.3
5. New Jersey Devils, 8.5
6. Buffalo Sabres, 7.6
7. Detroit Red Wings, 6.7
8. Dallas Stars, 5.8
9. Florida Panthers, 5.4
10. Los Angeles Kings, 4.5
11. Carolina Hurricanes, 3.2
12. Winnipeg Jets, 2.7
13. Philadelphia Flyers, 2.2
14. Tampa Bay Lightning, 1.8
15. New York Islanders, 0.9
