Trent Richardson on his way to Regina with intent of finalizing deal with Riders

Former University of Alabama Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson is on his way to Regina with the intention of finalizing an agreement that would make the 2012 third overall NFL pick a Saskatchewan Roughrider, per sources.

Richardson’s agent has been selling his client to CFL teams for at least a month.

The Riders added the 27-year-old runner to their negotiation list on July 28. The Pensacola, Florida native was last on an NFL roster in August 2016.

Richardson rushed for 1,679 yards and 21 touchdowns for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in 2011. After finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting that season, behind Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck, Richardson ran for 96 yards and one touchdown to help Alabama win the BCS National Championship.

Following the title game victory, Richardson declared for the 2012 NFL Draft. That May, Cleveland traded up to select the five-foot-nine, 230-pound back No. 3 overall. He signed a fully guaranteed four-year $20.4-million deal that included a $13.3-million signing bonus.

As a rookie NFL running back, Richardson carried the ball 267 times for 950 yards (3.6 yards per carry average) and 11 touchdowns while adding 367 yards and one touchdown on 51 receptions.

Two games into the 2013 NFL season, Indianapolis traded a 2014 first-round pick for Richardson. He spent the rest of the 2013 season and entire 2014 campaign with the Colts. Richardson ran for 977 yards and six touchdowns and recorded 494 yards and one touchdown on 55 catches in 29 games with Indianapolis.

Political correctness ( or cancel culture as it is called today) is a doctrine fostered by a delusional ,illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by MSM which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I've never watched a CFL game but with all the scrubs who head north, I get the feeling it's like watching the last quarter of an NFL preseason game.

I can appreciate Ticat's love for the game and his loyalty to the CFL,

but these threads are like reading about Styx and REO Speedwagon appearing at the Red Moose Casino in Saskatoon.

There once was a running back named Trent
whose time in the NFL was ill-spent
    He moved to Regina
    to fix his vagina
Still missing the holes as he went.

Report: Richardson won't sign with Riders

Running back Trent Richardson was reported to be heading to Regina to finalize a contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but that no longer appears to be the case.

According to Matt Zenitz of Al.com, Richardson, the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, has decided not to sign with the CFL team. Richardson told Al.com he would have to sign a one-year contract with a team option for a second, meaning he couldn't make a potential return to the National Football League until 2019.

Three Down Nation was the first to report the possible signing......

    That's being closed-minded, Opi.

It's good football. Been enjoying it for decades.

So you have no idea what you are saying then?? It is a different game. Yes the NFL is where the real elites go, but many great players fall thru the cracks. Most NFL QB's would be a failure up here because of the game difference. And NFL 'ers that do come here get very humbled very quickly.

The former Alabama running back was planning on flying to Canada to finalize the deal, but has decided not to sign, Richardson told AL.com.

The reason, Richardson said, is because he would have had to sign a one-year contract with a team option for a second year, so he would have essentially been locked into playing two years in Canada if he did well.

Standard practice to release a player in the 2nd yr if he has a shot to make the NFL.

He had to have some other gripe, and should know better by now. If he wants to keep playing, he'd better grasp at whatever he can. That's not a slam at the Canadian game, which I enjoy when I can see it. Trent lacks any ability whatever for some reason to understand the plays he's involved in, find holes and get through them, or react to opportunity on the field. It's like his brain scrambles at the snap, he panics, and then tries just running forward wherever without instinct. I don't think that works in the CFL either.

Even if he did well in Canada, and I really don't think he would, I think the NFL has seen enough of him to not think him worthwhile with even udfa RB's succeeding yearly out of college. Richardson is old news and wasted potential, more than likely in Canada as well, because they also know how to find younger potential, but in a smaller pool

If he wants to keep playing he'd better take what he can get, he's not in the catbird seat.

Now that the riders are looking to make the playoffs he signs. That says a lot, now we will see what he does. Ricky Williams came here and sucked.

Re: Trent Richardson on his way to Regina with intent of finalizing deal with Riders

Even after he had second thoughts the first time around, the Saskatchewan Roughriders never stopped pursuing running back Trent Richardson.

Back in late August, Richardson had travel plans arranged by the team to fly to Regina and finalize a contract. He had second thoughts, however, after realizing that all CFL entry-level deals are one year plus a team-held option – essentially two seasons. But the Riders were determined to see what he could do on the big field and further discussions led to Richardson finally getting to Regina and signing on the dotted line.

Richardson’s arrival – and sources say he showed up in excellent shape – might be ideal timing for the Riders.

Cameron Marshall is on the six-game injured list and Saskatchewan’s run game has suffered lately as a result. Around the league, there has been a slight shift to running backs who can be just as dangerous as slotbacks catching the football – Andrew Harris and Travon Van are prime examples. But as the weather turns, colder temperatures come and the elements play more of a role in late-season and playoff games, personnel men believe there is an advantage to having a power back that gets improved traction just by sheer size.

The Alabama star would fit that mould. Richardson was known for being tough to take down in the SEC, gashing defences regularly. Although, his 3.3-yards-per-carry average in the NFL was a main reason why no NFL teams came with a contract offer after he was released by Baltimore in August 2016.

One bigger back rising to stardom in the CFL currently is James Wilder Jr. He checks in at six-foot-three, 232 pounds and ran a 4.65 40-yard time coming out of the NCAA. Compare that with Richardson, who is built much differently, but he’s five-foot-nine, 230 pounds and ran a 4.53 40-yard dash in 2012, the year he was drafted third overall by the Cleveland Browns. Similar size and depending on the shape Richardson is in possibly more or similar speed to Wilder Jr. gives reasons for an up-close look.

Wilder Jr. couldn't hang on to a roster spot though, never had a chance to prove himself with regular action. Thing about Richardson is that he had plenty of chances with 614 carries for 2 teams in 3 years and looked incapable despite the physical tools.

More power to him if he succeeds in the CFL, I won't see it as a slam on the CFL which is a different game I appreciate. Maybe the space and the pace will suit him. He has a major issue with seeing holes and hitting them though as a pro.

Re: Trent Richardson on his way to Regina with intent of finalizing deal with Riders

The 27-year-old back will make a pro-rated $67,500 in “hard” money for 2017 and the same number for 2018. If the Alabama alum hit every incentive in his contract he would make $80,000.

There was no signing bonus included as is the case with most American players who have not played a down in the CFL. It’s a standard rookie deal for an athlete who has NFL experience.

After Richardson was selected third overall in the 2012 NFL draft by Cleveland he inked a four-year, $20.4 million pact that was fully guaranteed with a $13.3 million signing bonus.
