Just how much are you willing to spend if you are the Bills GM......

next April to land a "franchise QB"?

    Me?

I say the Bills will probably draft somewhere between 6-10. I'd be willing to give up both 2018 1sts, 2018 3rd and 2019 1st.

That's a big package for sure but I don't think the Bills would have any choice but to do something like this to get their guy.

How about you? Would you be willing to give that much up? Less? More?

(Edit: this is assuming we have to move i to the top 3)

I think this is a potentially very deep QB class, so I think we're safe staying wherever we end up and getting a quality starter there. If not, then we probably just got unlucky and can try again in 2019 when- presumably- fewer teams need to find their QB because they landed good ones the year prior.

at this point id almost do a ricky williams deal

and lets hope your wrong about 6-10 it would mean we just did the average of the last 17 years

you could be right because about 5-6 teams in the league are dumpster fires

    Hell no to the 2019 1st. I'll give both 1sts and a 3rd in 2018 and no higher than a 2nd in 2019.

Remember, we need people to block for this hypothetical QB and targets for him to throw to. We currently have none of that.

The only thing you and I have different is The 2019 pick. I'd give a 1st and you'd give a 2nd.

Interesting. Isn't that splitting hairs when we are talking about the most important position in team sports?

I agree with what DraftBoy said a couple of days ago. There may be 6 legitimate franchise QBs in this draft. The Bills can get one without moving up. If they draft #6 - #10 they could easily grab Mason Rudolph which would be a huge win.

Tough to say this early, but I'm a proponent of staying put and letting the draft come to me. Now, if we get to Day 1 and we're within a couple of spots to move up and get 'my guy' I'd be willing to deal a couple of picks but no way am I giving up a bunch. Still need an offensive line...still need receivers...and defense still wins championships.

This will never be the case. There won't be 6 franchise guys, it's never been done. You may get 2 or 3 franchise guys and 2 or 3 other guys that are Andy Dalton, Matt Schaub, Chad Pennington.

If you think the guy is a franchise QB, ****ing can't miss Peyton Mannin/Tom Brady/Jim Kelly mother****er you pay the price.

It's highly likely SF and NYJ are drafting drafting 1-2 and won't even entertain an offer if Rosen and D'Arnold both come out.

However if by chance say the Bears get the #1 pick and are willing to deal.

    Both #1's this year #2 and # 4. The same thing in 2019 too, a 1, 2 and 4.

You're talking a FRANCHISE QB going to be here for 15 years? You absolutely give up 7 picks for that. If they want Dareus for good measure you can ship his ass out too.

What would you have traded for Brady in 2005? I'd trade at a minimum 7 first rounders for Tom Brady age 28 -39.

No. If we wiff on the QB pick in 2018 and we traded away the 2019 pick, then it's minimum 2020 before we get another shot at a replacement. Trading away future first rounders is a recipe for disaster.

The last time we thought this way E.Manning went #1, Rivers #4 and then Donahoe tried to trade up to get Roethlisberger and didn't offer enough to get 2-3 teams above Pittsburgh to move down. So, he traded back into that deep class & ended up with the 4th best QB, JP Losman. Later, we found out the QB class only went 3 deep in franchise QBs. Let's not assume there's that much depth in 2018. If Chicago has one of the 1st 2 spots, we need to offer whatever it takes to get that pick, even if it's our 2 1st rounders, 1 each from round 2 & 3 and our 2019 #1. Let's not sit back & get 2018's JP.

The Bills were so sure that Jim Kelly was 'the' franchise guy that they took a TE with their first pick instead.

Whoa....easy now....I don't own crystal ball, nor do I watch college football, but there's no way there are 6 legitimate franchise QBs

We've been whiffing on the QB position for two decades. I won't sweat the 2019 pick.

Remember what Polian gave up for Cornelius Bennett?

The Bills gave up two first round picks, a second round pick and Greg Bell.

That is pretty amazing when you think about it.

Even more amazing is that Detroit picked next and didn't take a QB.

I just harken back to when Donahoe reportedly tried to trade up with the Texans in 2004 to jump ahead of the Steelers to draft Roethlisberger.....but wouldn't meet Houston's price.

How would the last 13 years have looked with Big Ben?

Then you can't say there aren't.

Potential franchise QBs I can name off the top of my head: Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Luke Falk, Mason Rudolph. That's 7, and we're only 3 weeks into the season so more could emerge (while some of these guys may fall out of the group).

At this early stage I don't see anyone I'd use all that draft capital to get. We basically possess a major team building hoard of picks. I don't trust them to roll all or nothings. I'm with YardRat.

You absolutely do whatever it takes to get a legitimate franchise QB in this league.... and you rely on intelligent scouting and analysis to identify said player. You then target and acquire him. That is the clearest path and way more reliable IMO than chance/luck/faith/treating the draft like a bingo board.

It's also important to note that some years there are none, in which case you cut your losses and wait. This year there might be two. Some years there are up to three.

It is possible to identify an undervalued franchise QB (i.e. Russel Wilson and Aaron Rodgers) but it takes balls and smarts, neither of which the Bills have proven they have.

Agreed. Give me Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers and as a franchise I dont even need a first round pick to build a winning team.
