Commercialism. NFL doesn't give a **** about what the Anthem means, it's about who's performing and what ratings it brings.
My humble opinion: the song should be sung solemn, not a ratings thing."You can't be a real country unless you have beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need beer."

There's probably no video of it but the worst anthem I ever heard was at the stadium (then known as Rich Stadium) about 20-30 years ago when they had some soldier sing it. If I remember correctly, it was a game against the Jets. He was so bad literally half the fans were laughing at him. The other half were feeling sorry for him & just praying it would end soon. I get all the patriotic significance of the anthem but it's really not a great song. The melody was originally a bawdy drinking song and the adapted lyrics are dated and too much about war for my taste. And it's a very hard song to sing decently. 90% of the renditions you hear flat out suck. Personally I'd rather we went with America the Beautiful but that's just me.Comment
