    Was trading ROR a mistake?

Seems as if the homo cabal of Eichel and Samson won out... and ROR was moved.

    but was it a mistake?

No, getting the package we did is the mistake. I'd prefer to keep him over the garbage we got in return.

I have been saying it all season. You are now looking for the player you traded away. A skilled, defensively sound 2C. Don't look now but those Blues that suck now that they have ROR are in a playoff spot.

I don't think he wanted to be here...we probably should have gotten more, but Thompson might turn out..

We couldn’t get more... the market wasn’t there.

so... should we have just kept him and managed the lockeroom

Do we know? He said he hated losing and it was tough to come to the rink. He was saying what lots of others were thinking. Do we know if he would have been the same now with some success? Or with him probably more success?

Everyone in the world knowing you were going to trade him severely hampered your leverage. As an example Evander Kane wanted out of Winnipeg for at least 2 summers before we got a good deal that was worth what the player was worth. Maybe more depending on which side you sit. Him "quitting" would have been apparent on the ice and the media/fans across the league would let him know about it. From the outside it feels like he was traded to placate the fan base more than anything.

The package contains two unknowns (2019 1st rounder and 2021 2nd) at this point and having a downer in the locker room isn't great. Lehner was maybe the bigger gaffe. He sits #1 in GAA and 2nd in S%.

Re: Was trading ROR a mistake?

    This is a loaded question.

If we could guarantee that ROR would be playing at the same level as he is in St. Louis with no locker room issues, of course you keep him. But even if he was still here, that's certainly no guarantee.

The other issue: we likely wouldn't have Skinner if we had ROR. It looks like both could have been squeezed under the cap, but we'd be back in Tim Murray territory where there is daily jockeying to stay under the cap.

In the end, though, the most telling thing is wins, and in that category the team has been far better off without ROR.

Nope. ROR is an *******. Someone should have clocked him a few times. This would all be fine if Berglund was still here contributing. He'd have 10 - 12 goals right now which would have translated into another 4 -5 wins. His walking out on the team is the problem. He was the perfect veteran 2nd line center. They needed him here playing at a high level not being a head case and walking out. This is all his fault.

And, again, I don't believe Housley is the right head coach.

Re: Was trading ROR a mistake?

I didn't feel ROR fit in the current core. He's 27. By the time the sabres are ready to enter the ring with the big boys, he's gonna be in decline, even if it's marginal. I felt that the sabres were best to trade him for young assets that can fit with the current core and help keep the window open longer. The first will help, as will Thompson, who I think is a keeper once he figures out his role. We see flashes of brilliance from him once in a while.

I don't think the sabres got enough for him, and I know the market wasn't there. All in all, it needed to be done, but one has to wonder if it would have been better to keep him and trade him this off season. Oh well.

We still haven't seen what the end net results for ROR with draft picks still being undrafted. In terms of keeping him, I agree that if ROR is still on our roster than Skinner isn't and to me he's been our MVP this season so tough sell that I'd want ROR back.

Re: Was trading ROR a mistake?

    Let's combine the two trades.

    Out:
    Ryan O'Reilly
    Cliff PU
    2nd round pick
    3rd round pick

    Is that it?

    In:
    Vladimir Sobotka
    Patrik Berglund
    Tage Thompson
    1st round pick
    Jeff Skinner

Say what you will about Berglund and Sobotka. That's a good summer

The Sabres look terrible vs Rangers & Devils. Glad I didn't go to the Devils game. Housley has to go. He's not coach material.

    Their next games are...

    Panthers
    Lightning
    Caps
    Flyers
    Leafs x 2
    Penguins

We should have a top 10 draft pick by the end of that stretch and Calls for Housley’s head will be in full WNY drunken throat.

the ginger is hanging on by a thread. I don’t expect this soft crew to bail him out. Eichel would have to go beast mode and ever since his concussion... he’s been just alright.

I don't know if any coach could win with the roster that is assembled there. Maybe Trotz because he did turn around the Isle but who else?
