How will Buffalo use both Jordan Phillips and Ed Oliver?

They are different players playing the same position. For the moment, Phillips is the official starter. Oliver is about 6'2" (give or take an inch) and weighs in the 280s. Jordan Phillips is like 6'5" and 321. Thous he's pretty athletic for a big guy, he doesn't have the freakish explosion off the snap that Oliver has. Both are going to get a significant number of snaps every game, assuming they are both healthy. The question is when do those snaps come. Does Frazier use a straight rotation (by series, or series of downs) or is he going to do some situational substitution, using Oliver on more obvious passing downs? What do you think?
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

It's my understanding that McDermott limes to keep a rotation of good DTs to keep them fresh so they don't wear down...

I don’t see this as a problem for us. I see this as a problem for opposing offenses. Phillips gets run stuffing downs, Oliver gets pass rushing downs. Then when the other team figures that out, put them both in, show 3-4 lined up on the OL’s, then have Hughes or Lawson creep down to DE and shift to the gaps right before the snap.

It won’t fool NE but it’ll give the inexperienced QB’s in NJ and Miami fits.

Failed strategy. Brady’s a catcher who will enjoy that.

I think they'll go straight-up splitting reps early, regardless of situation, until they get a feel for how to best utilize them.

I think it's a 4 man rotation with Star L, Oliver and the 2 Phillips. Fresh guys. All have talent and it takes the pressure off of Oliver and allows him to develop properly.

Absolutely! I will be interested to see how it works, particularly when both Oliver and Harrison Phillips are in at the same time, Oliver with his unique athleticism and Harrison with his aggressive style at zero tech. On the flip side, both are undersized for the position they play. They will have to prove they can hold up in run defense, because teams are surely going to test them.

Re: How will Buffalo use both Jordan Phillips and Ed Oliver?

Yeah pretty easy rotation to figure out between the DT's.

Phillips might get more looks on obvious run downs and Ed will likely get every opportunity possible to get after the passser.

I'd imagine in obvious passing situation you'll see a bit of both asked to shoot a gap and get after it. Phillips on the nose at 3rd and long could be a nice wrinkle. He'll basically command a double team leaving Ed and Jerry room to work.

I've been pretty tough on them this offseason, but I really do like their group of DTs. No idea how they'll use them, besides rotation, but suspect it won't be the obvious.

Is Mr. Pink the one to bring me down ? Is Peterman on an NFL roster in 2019 ? What avatar do I choose for Mr. Pink ? Stay tuned, it's hugely !

I like the thought of Jordan Phillips and Ed Oliver in on the same play. The Bills can potentially put a very disruptive defensive front four on the field if they want to.

Better question, we have 3 guys who play one position, who will rotate w Star?

While he is undersized for zero tech, that is Harrison Phillips' position, not three tech. He rotates in for Star Lotulelei. Where he lacks size, he's very strong and his wrestling background gives him a great understanding of leverage. So, Star and HP are your zero tech buys (nose tackle) and Jordan P and Ed Oliver are your 3 tech guys. There's a chance the Bills may give Harrison some snaps at 3 tech, but he's not changing position.
