With boasts and insults, Trump sets new benchmark for incoherence

'I am the Chosen One': with boasts and insults, Trump sets new benchmark for incoherence

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...wish-democrats

President outdoes himself in new press conference as he attacks the Danish prime minister, Jewish Democrats and the press

Donald Trump started off precisely on-message.

Strolling to the end of a White House driveway on Wednesday.....the president began speaking.... “So the economy is doing very, very well,” he said.

.....it was a sound message to project to a skittish nation. But that was as good as it got.

What followed might have swept away all previous Trumpian benchmarks for incoherence, self-aggrandizement, prevarication and rancor in a presidency that has seemed before to veer loosely along the rails of reason but may never have come quite so close to spectacularly jumping the tracks.

Over an ensuing half-hour rant, Trump trucked in antisemitic tropes, insulted the Danish prime minister, insisted he wasn’t racist, bragged about the performance of his former Apprentice reality show, denied starting a trade war with China, praised Vladimir Putin and told reporters that he, Trump, was the “Chosen One” – all within hours of referring to himself as the “King of Israel” and tweeting in all caps: “WHERE IS THE FEDERAL RESERVE?”

Leaving aside those who were left merely gape-jawed, the performance inspired reactions from new expressions of doubt about Trump’s fitness for office to evocations of “the last president I know of who compared himself to the Messiah”.

(That turns out, according to Brookings Institution fellow Benjamin Wittes, to be Andrew Johnson (1865-9), whose articles of impeachment cited his “intemperate, inflammatory and scandalous harangues”.)

After the news conference, the hashtag #25thAmendmentNow was the top trending item on US Twitter

A battle between him and joe should be interesting. lol
A very disturbing trend in Canada now is that Justin Trudeau's behavior and lies have become 'acceptable' . . . more disturbing yet is his cabinet of brain-dead penguins have accepted his criminal behavior and have surrounded and support him. Those same brain-dead penguins have a lesser grasp of 'ethics' than their leader . . . . this country is in deep poo.

Re: With boasts and insults, Trump sets new benchmark for incoherence

Trump's Unhinged Display Should Frighten Everyone

It’s no joke, as former vice president Joe Biden would say. In the last week or so, we’ve witnessed President Trump deny there is a threat of recession; blame the Federal Reserve chairman for raising interest rates too high (!); deny, then admit and then finally reject consideration of cuts to either payroll taxes or a capital-gains taxes. We’ve seen him seriously consider “buying” Greenland, then cancel a tripto Denmark and then finally insult Denmark’s female prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, whom Trump characterized as “nasty” (his all-purpose insult to women who won’t do his bidding), and claimed that when she says his idea about purchasing Greenland was “absurd,” she is offending the United States. He’s called Jews disloyal on consecutive days and proclaimed himself the “chosen one” (or should it be “Chosen One”?), though he still insists the trade deficit means China has “sucked” hundreds of billions of dollars out of our economy. He insists that kicking Russia out of the Group of 8 for its invasion of Ukraine was an overreaction by President Barack Obama (I guess that is what he means), and should be reversed.

This is nuts. I don’t mean, nuts like, “Allowing the deficit to expand to a trillion dollars is nuts,” or "pretending personal diplomacy with Kim Jong Un works is nuts.” I mean, in the non-medical sense, he is erratic, narcissistic, unhinged, unable to control his anger, illogical and forgetful. (Remember the rally in New Hampshireat which he appeared to repeat a portion of the speech he gave at the beginning.) He has lost the ability to differentiate himself from the country and his own psychological needs from the country’s interests. To oppose him is to be an “enemy of the people.”

You say that we knew all this? I’d argue his ability to conceal these habits has considerably diminished and the period over which the rants stretch has lengthened. The craziness is swallowing the moments of lucidity, and given the real potential for a recession, his incoherence carries frightening risks.

This is not a call for the 25th Amendment, which cannot be activated without his Cabinet and vice president, does not provide a final remedy and was not designed for these circumstances. I am calling for some truth-telling.

Let’s begin with former Trump officials, and I don’t mean Anthony Scaramucci. It is the patriotic obligation of Gary Cohn, Rex Tillerson, Jim Mattis, Daniel Coats and H.R. McMaster to speak with one voice, to make plain their concerns about the president’s fitness for office and call for a thorough psychological examination by a panel of expert psychiatrists, or if Trump refuses, for his resignation. They don’t have to worry about alarming other world leaders. They know. Believe me, they know.

All presidential candidates (Republican challengers and Democrats) should express grave concern about his mental and emotional fitness, as should members of Congress. If need be, hearings should be held to convey expert opinion about his observable behaviors.

Democrats in the House should move as expeditiously as possible toward impeachment, based on the conduct outlined in the Mueller report, but with an eye toward the growing urgency of the problem.

Will these compel Republicans to turn on him (e.g., join the call for resignation, vote to impeach) or convince Trump to resign? In all likelihood, they won’t, but the voters deserve to know before the election (and hopefully sooner than November 2020) what is going on and the danger in retaining a mentally and emotionally unfit president. And if Trump’s conduct gets worse (as we imagine it will) and a recession or other national crises arises, everyone will be glad that the process had begun.

He's nuts and getting nutser. Go figure.

Hard to understand how evangelicals will support him unless they aren't, hard to understand how farmers will support him unless they aren't, hard to understand what big business will like because he's a one man recession machine, hard to understand vets supporting him because he's deferment guy, hard to understand how conservatives support him because he isn't.

Jackass TV appeal, he's comical because he'll do something more stupid than he did an hour ago, and you get lost in all his zany Presidential shenanigans.

Hard to understand how anyone can support him anymore. He's nuts. Always was. Isn't a surprise.
    • "Dems have no achomlishments" - The President of the United States of America, that some people elected and defend. He says he's a stable genius by the way and some people still think so.

I would say he's nuts and so are his supporters. They ARE farmers, evangelicals, big business, vets, and conservatives AND also nuts!

Besides the fact that an overwhelming majority of his base are vile racists and bigots.....Trump is mean to liberals.....and that is a HUGE attraction. In fact, his treatment of Hillary was one of the biggest turn on to these miscreants. And that is why they (and Trump) constantly keep talking about her. It's amazing that at almost every Trump Klan Rally they love the "lock her up" chant.

    They truly are the "deplorables".
