How do adults not know this? I learned not to mix bleach and ammonia in elementary school.
Its a guess, but it might have been that someone didn't read the labels before mixing them. One was a floor cleaner and one was a tile cleaner. Someone didn't check ingredients. They were labeled under their trade names, Super 8 and Scale Kleen.
Or..it might be like you said, someone didn't know chlorine bleach and ammonia create toxic fumes.
There was a case out here where something similar happened. An honest mistake that had a catastrophic effect.
I wasn't here at the time but know the story.
A club was offering Watermelon shots as a special one night. They had a pink powdery mix to make them.
The problem was, it looked like the dish cleaning powder used to wash glasses. Someone left the cleaning stuff where they shouldn't have and...you can guess what happened next.
3 people became violently ill. For the worst victim, she was found in the ladies room, unconscious and foaming at the mouth.
They had to remove her esophagus with a section of her intestine, because it was perforated beyond repair. Afterward, she couldn't sleep lying down at all, because her stomach acid would flow up to her throat. It had to be replaced every 10 years or so.
Yeah, if it’s name brand they may not have known exactly what’s in it, but bleach and ammonia both have very distinctive smells. Personally I’d recognize both odors right away and know not to mix.
Also as a general rule it’s just a bad idea to mix chemicals.
This was local. About 30 mins away from me.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.
