    Earthquakes in Puerto Rico

The island has been hit with a series of earthquakes over the past few days, the strongest one coming overnight at a 6.4.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...9fb_story.html

Most of the buildings there are made of stucco and rebar to withstand hurricane winds, but earthquakes haven't historically been an issue so buildings aren't built to withstand them the way they are in places like California. Most of the island's power plants are in the south close to the epicenter, so there are widespread power outages again.

Wonder how long it'll take Trump to show up to throw paper towels at people and complain about Democrats.

    Send Greta in.
“No one has explained to Greta that the modern world is complex and diverse, that it is developing quickly, and that people in Africa or in many Asian countries want to live at the same wealth levels as in Sweden,” Mr Putin said.

They move to the West Side of Buffalo and NYC. This state ALWAYS votes Democrat, since half the state is on public assistance

The Cubans don't like competition in Florida.

The problem with earthquakes is that in many places they don't happen frequently enough for people to remember that they can. The recent earthquakes in Puerto Rico are the worst in 160 years. Nobody remembers the last one which was that severe. Because of that, when they built houses, they didn't even have a thought about what an earthquake could do to it. The next one that severe might not happen until sometime in the 22nd century. Nobody in a hundred years is going to remember what this one just did. In contrast, the next bad hurricane could happen next year, or next decade, but people will remember.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

Well that's the thing. It's very expensive to make buildings earthquake resistant. It's expensive to make them hurricane resistant too, but Puerto Rico gets hurricanes almost every year (not like Maria, but bad tropical storms or Cat 1's). It makes sense to spend the extra money for hurricanes, but not for earthquakes that happen every 100-150 years.

About as long as it takes corrupt Puerto Rican officials and administrators to keep supplies from getting to the people.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Gov. Wanda Vázquez fired the heads of Puerto Rico's housing and family departments Sunday in the latest fallout over the discovery of a warehouse filled with emergency supplies dating from Hurricane Maria.

The removal of Housing Secretary Fernando Gil and Department of Family Secretary Glorimar Andújar came a day after the governor fired the director of Puerto Rico's emergency management agency. Vázquez fired him hours after a video posted to Facebook shows a warehouse in Ponce filled with thousands of cases of water and other much-needed supplies that are believed to have dated back to the hurricane that struck the island in 2017, ABC News has learned.
