    Impeachment Trial Thread

Trial starts today at 1pm with the passage of the rules package for the trial which will be contested.

This thread is intended to provide updates, commentary and information for people who wish to follow the trial and keep up with its development. I humbly ask that we try out best to keep the partisan asshattery out of this thread to the greatest extent possible.

I will try and post an update every morning of what to expect during the dayís scheduled proceedings and provide updates based on my own watching and that from others.

Please let me urge all of us to keep our cool and maintain some level of civil discourse during this process.
    COMING SOON...

    Re: Impeachment Trial Thread

I hope this impeachment process illustrates the best of the American political process but I suspect it will show the worst.

I just want to be entertained and although my expectations are low, I am prepared for further disappointment.

Fortunately, as a Canadian, I can simply change the channel since the result marginally impacts me.

Day 1 - What to Expect

Yesterday afternoon Majority Leader Mitch McConnell released the rules package for the impeachment trial proceedings. That package will be formally introduced today to the full Senate and debated before a vote on it. The package includes the following provisions:
    -Each side will have 24 hours spread over two days to present their case on impeachment;
    -Evidence from the House is not automatically admitted into the record and must be admitted by vote after each side has presented their case;
    -Senators will them be given 16 hours to submit questions to Justice Roberts to be asked of either side;
-The Senate will then vote on whether to consider additional witnesses
-Lastly, the Senate will vote on removal

Minority Leader Schumer has already said he believes these rules to be unfair and will be working to amend the rules today during debate and before the vote. Assuming the Senate passes rules tonight the opening arguments will begin tomorrow.

    Re: Impeachment Trial Thread

I think McConnell and his caucus are vastly underestimating how bad a sham trial is going to look, and the effect it will have on the Senate races in the fall. And make no mistake all McConnell wants is a sham trial. 70% of Americans want witnesses. Our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves.

Not yet. All we need is 4 conscientious Republicans to step up and do the right thing. I don't really see that happening cuz "conscientious Republican' has come to be an oxymoron.

Watch the coverage on FOX News and you will understand why this sham trial will have no impact.

    Re: Impeachment Trial Thread

The Republicans plan is to have the whole process done before the Super Bowl. Good plan since dumb America will be focused on the game and won't remember the impeachment come Monday morning.

McConnell hopes to finish the trial in about a week and a half

    From CNN's Manu Raju
    J. Scott Applewhite

Two sources in communication with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell say he wants this trial done in about 10 days. The way this schedule is laid out, it makes clear that goal is possible.
In his floor speech earlier today, McConnell warned about subpoenas for witnesses and documents, saying that “pursuing those witnesses” sought by Democrats “could indefinitely delay the Senate trial.”
If each side uses all 24 hours for opening arguments side, here's how the schedule could play out:

    • Tomorrow: Democratic arguments
    • Thursday: Democratic arguments
    • Friday: Democratic arguments
    • Saturday: Trump team arguments
    • Monday: Trump team arguments
    • Jan. 28: Trump team arguments
    • Jan. 29: Senator questions
    • Jan 30: Senator questions
    • Jan 31: Four hours of debate on whether to subpoena witnesses and subpoenas, a vote on witnesses and documents, and a vote on other motions; If all votes fail, the Senate could move to the acquittal vote

Not even 4 hours or so in and already we have the first senator to have been caught getting some shut-eye: Sen. James Risch(R-Idaho), as noted by the Washington Post.

    Re: Impeachment Trial Thread

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/22/polit...ice/index.html

John Roberts scolds legal teams after tense exchange: 'Those addressing the Senate should remember where they are'

Roberts had just listened to the impeachment managers and Trump's legal team rip into each other after House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler made the case for issuing a subpoena for former national security adviser John Bolton's testimony.

During that argument, Nadler accused Republican senators of "voting for a coverup" by killing amendments for documents and testimony of additional witnesses.
"So far, I'm sad to say, I see a lot of senators voting for a coverup. Voting to deny witnesses and obviously a treacherous vote," Nadler said. "A vote against an honest consideration of the evidence against the President. A vote against an honest trial. A vote against the United States."
That led to White House counsel Pat Cipollone firing back during his own remarks: "The only one who should be embarrassed, Mr. Nadler, is you. For the way you addressed this body. This is the United States Senate. You're not in charge here."
Roberts said that kind of exchange was not appropriate and, providing a historical example, reminded the legal teams they they need to be on their best behavior.

    Re: Impeachment Trial Thread

I was watching FOX News yesterday during the 8:00 PM hour and they simply talked over coverage when the Democrat Impeachment Managers were speaking with important issues such as what chocolate bars and candy were available to the Senators. The captions to describe the process included "Hysterical".

That is what close to 40% of Americans are watching.

There is no longer a people or one people in America.

    It really is two nations.

I only saw a little of this, but Hakeem Jeffries totally knocked the ball out of the park.

    Perfect example.

You watched Jeffries and was impressed.

The other people of America weren't.

On FOX News, Tucker Carlson talked over almost all of Jeffries speech and brought in guests to talk about the chocolate bars the Senators had access to.

By the way, they have Mars bars.

Well, Fox can't let the uppity people have too much airtime

They fill their quota with Diamond and Silk, which proves none of them are racist.
