    politics in games

a little self indulgent thread because i'm always looking for new games to check out. anyways. what i wanna know is: have you played anything recently that was particularly notable in terms of storytelling and/or had an interesting plot with clear political themes (all stories are inherently political but you know what i mean)

personally, two games i played last year really stand out when it comes to this kind of thing: the outer worlds, for it's humorous depiction of a dystopian capitalist hellscape, and fire emblem: three houses (specifically the crimson flower route which was all about leading a necessary violent revolution in order to destroy an oppressive caste system and the religious institution that helped the nobility keep it in place for so long)

    also TOW had a g o r g e o u s main theme

Replaying the original Starcraft from 1998...

That game is a bitch slap to right-wing religious fanatics.

The Protoss Conclave are portrayed as religious bigots who choose to hate their own brethren, the Dark Templar, rather than joining forces to defeat their common foe, the Zerg.

In the end, the Conclave is destroyed by the Zerg and the Dark Templar patch together the surviving Protoss to rebuild their battered home world.

Two of my favorite franchises both have very strong political undertones.

God of War is loosely based on Greek mythology (with some Norse mythology thrown in the most recent one) but they throw in some modern political digs. The most recent one is excellent.

The whole Assassin’s Creed series is historical fiction and is overtly political, especially in the modern scenes. I’m playing Oddessy now.

I admire china because their basic dictatorship is allowing them to actually turn their economy around on a dime.

I haven’t played all of them- I’ve played II, Brotherhood, Revelations, III, IV- Black Flag and I’m working on Oddyssey now. III is probably my favorite but I’m a bit biased cuz I love American history. Black Flag is up there too. At first I didn’t like it because I found sailing the ships annoying but it grew on me once I figured it out and got better at it.

Also, I spent a lot of time on Black Flag. I started playing it on PS3 then my console crapped out so I upgraded to PS4 and had to start over. Then I was about 25% through the game on PS4 and I accidentally deleted my game due to over indulgence in alcoholic beverages.

Syndicate looked so great in the trailers but I had several people who are much more avid gamers than I am tell me that it sucked so I didn’t bother playing it.

I never played the first one because friends told me it didn’t have the fast travel yet and there was way too much time riding from place to place on horseback.

While we’re taking a break from Destiny, I’m playing Ghost Recon: Wildlands and my wife is playing The Division. Both games are pretty political if you ask me. GR is about stopping a cartel in South America who has influence over the entire country and TD is about a small task force trying to rebuild what’s left and figure out what happened. TD2 is more of the same
