South Carolina Dem. Debate Thread 2/25

CBS News has announced the moderators for the 10th Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina on February 25, the last time the candidates will face off before the state's critical primary.

"CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell and "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King will moderate the debate, joined in questioning by "Face the Nation" moderator and senior foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan, chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett and "60 Minutes" correspondent Bill Whitaker.

CBS News is co-hosting the debate with the Congressional Black Caucus Institute in Charleston, South Carolina, beginning at 8 p.m. ET on CBS stations. The debate will be streamed live on CBSN, CBS News' free 24/7 streaming service, and appear in its entirety on BET, a subsidiary of ViacomCBS. Twitter is a debate partner, and voters can use the hash tag #DemDebate to submit questions that might be posed to the candidates.

Re: South Carolina Dem. Debate Thread 2/25

Bloomberg is the Milli Vanilli of 2020

To me, he brings to mind the music industry’s biggest hoax of the late 1980s. Milli Vanilli was a German pop duo that seemingly came from nowhere to record hit after hit. And not just hits, they had three No. 1's and a multiplatinum album, all of which led to a Grammy Award for best new artist in 1990. The flaw behind their flawless production is that they did not actually do the singing.

In the studio, it made no difference if they were not on the track, as long as they were on the cover. In public, they lip-synced. It worked well for a while, but eventually the truth became unavoidable. Little clues indicted them until a skipping soundtrack betrayed them during a live concert. As fast as they had appeared, they were gone.

Democratic House Whip Jim Clyburn will announce an endorsement the morning after the debate.

Betting favorite would have to be Biden, but the other moderates are also potentially in play. An endorsement for Sanders or Warren would be a shocking development.

Re: South Carolina Dem. Debate Thread 2/25

    A recent CBS poll of likely voters has Biden up with 28%...Bernie 23%...Steyer 18%...Warren 12%...Buttigieg 10%...Klobuchar 4% (MOE +/- 5.5).

Since November among Black voters in that state Biden has lost 19 percentage points, while Steyer (+22) and Sanders (+6) have picked up support from that demographic.

As far as the big picture, it was mentioned a Dem hasn't won SC in forty years, so this may be the D's Super Bowl for this state.

Politico is reporting that Clyburn will endorse Biden on Wednesday. Will be a big boost to his efforts to hold on to the state from a hard charging Sanders.

It would be a huge victory for Sanders if he finishes a solid 2nd, If he wins outright, The nomination is basically his.

Clyburn is an establishment Democratic that should have been termed-out already. He remained neutral in 2008 despite being critical of Clinton (probably didn't want to lose party support by supporting Obama, or respect from his black constituents by supporting Clinton) and officially endorsed Hillary in 2016.

He isn't going to buck the DNC.

Whoa...Oh boy. His constituents (and almost all thinking Democrats across the country) would very much disagree with you. Rep. Clyburn is a very well respected icon, not only in the black community but throughout the Democratic Party members....literally tens of millions....both black and white.

It's this kind of dismissal...."Clyburn is an establishment Democratic that should have been termed-out already."....is what pisses off black Americans....especially when coming from Bernie supporters.

The profound lack of understanding, empathy and sensitivity to the black community is something Bernie's supporters better correct ASAP.

Clyburn holds the highest leadership position in the Democratic House. He has won re-election 14 times. And, you seem to just sneer at those facts and, basically tell black people everywhere that they are not worthy to make decisions on who to vote for.

His neutrality in the 2008 election is probably more because he was the third ranking member in Congress, and the highest-ranking black in Congress....and party leadership traditionally stay neutral during a primary, especially a closely contested one.

Additionally, Rep Clyburn decided to be neutral more than a year before the 2008 primary, to "help secure an early primary for SC.....as the NY Times stated (in article linked below)...

Mr. Clyburn, a veteran of the civil rights movement and a power in state Democratic politics, put himself on the sidelines more than a year ago to help secure an early primary for South Carolina, saying he wanted to encourage all candidates to take part. But he said recent remarks by the Clintons that he saw as distorting civil rights history could change his mind.
Maybe you should read this article from the NY Times from January, 2008 before you stick your foot in your mouth anymore.

Re: South Carolina Dem. Debate Thread 2/25

    Biden now must win.

He must win big or he's done and so is the party establishment's goal of stopping Bernie.

    Should be an entertaining debate.

Biden better perform something new for him, so the pressure is really on.

    Is Bloomy in this one?

He needs to improve a bunch and that's not likely after watching his performance in the prior debate.

Get your ready it's gonna be a hoot.

Him needing to be termed-out has absolutely nothing to do with skin color, and everything to do with him having a stranglehold on the same office for 15 terms.

Bernie's the first CNN Town Hall this week in SC, and replying to a "when are you going to choose a VP candidate and who might that be?" he responded "that's presumptuous at this time, but I can tell you it won't be an old white guy". LOL...

    Whatever.

The EXACT same thing can be said about Bernie.

It's a cheap shot and TOTAL bull****!!!

BTW...I did not suggest that your intention was racially motivated.....my point is that Blacks, in that district and all over the country DO believe that it is. There are reasons why Bernie is not popular in the black community. This attitude is one of them.

During a town hall on CNN on Monday, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) stated that it was “a good thing” that Fidel Castro taught people to read and write and that China’s government has “taken more people out of extreme poverty than any country in history.” He also stated that he has been “critical of all authoritarian regimes” like China and Cuba.
