Re: NFL likely will play on Saturdays if college football season cancelled

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL likely will move games from Sundays to Saturday, if college football doesn’t proceed this season. It’s unclear whether the games would be broadcast, streamed, or distributed on a pay-per-view basis, but the league likely would backfill the vacant Saturday windows with NFL content.

The easiest approach would be to treat each Saturday like the late-season triple header the league staged in 2019, with a game at 1:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8:15 p.m. ET. That would trim the Sunday slate by three games each week.

Let's hope. Adding another day of games will make up for a ton of lost revenue.

Be interesting to see if they try and buy up some of open TV spots and televise more games this year. I mean the 12pm ESPN slots, the 8pm ABC slot are all wide open if there is no CFB. I’d certainly like to see 8-10 games per weekend as opposed to 4-5.

If the slots are open, they're definitely going to be filled with NFL games. Both sides would be foolish not to make it happen.

Not quite that simple, they would have to agree to a new/revised TV deal and the networks would need to sell advertising to help defray those costs. Given the current economic situation, not every network may want to fill those spots. I hope they do, but there are economic considerations that don’t make this as simple as open spots must be filled.

I never said, nor did I suggest, that it would be "easy." Just like when I insisted there would be a season (and there will be) that it would be "easy." The only easy part is both sides agreeing that they want more games to be played.

We don’t even know that both sides agree on that. Too many variables to know or speculate.

Technically we don't know. But considering the NFL would be replacing college football and be losing ad revenue from that loss.

Let me change the above. It should read "considering the networks would be..."

I can't say that I know enough about how those advertising deals work to know if that revenue is locked in based on content or whatever else. You could be right.

It will be interesting to say the least to see what that does to the NFL draft. At best, it becomes a complete crap shoot. At worst it gets cancelled altogether. I wonder if the league would try to change eligibility rules if it is held.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

NCAA will also likely have to offer extended eligibility.

This is hilarious fantasy land nonsense.

If college football get "cancelled"...then the likelihood of the NFL getting "canceled" is almost assured.

This fantasy land of a NFL "season" actually happening is sinking into the absurd. With every passing day, and reality of the situation unfolds, it's becoming more and more obvious that the NFL season will NOT happen in any significant way.

Sure....they may try to put on a few weeks of games....it will then all come crashing down in a big pile of greed, hubris and delusion.

This. It's hard to imagine a situation where the NFL figures it out but the NCAA and the big conferences can't.

I agree and disagree. A lot of college's revenue depends on the fans being in the seats. Yes, they do get a ton of TV revenue, but I don't think it's shared evenly like it is in the NFL. Plus, the NFL only has 32 teams to worry about, NCAA has 130. It's a bit of a different situation, not to mention the college athletes aren't being paid millions of dollars to play.

That being said, I also don't see how an NFL season could take place with fans. No fans would mean no home field advantage, which, let's face it, is HUGE in the NFL.
