Sean McDermott 'gap' between Bills, Chiefs, 'the speed element

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of becoming the latest dynasty to dominate the AFC.

As we watched with the New England Patriots' 20 years of supremacy, contenders are likely to come and go. One current candidate to continually butt heads with Patrick Mahomes & Co. is the Buffalo Bills, who fell to the reigning champs in the AFC Championship Game.

Bills coach Sean McDermott knows his team still has strides to make to compete with K.C.

"There is still a gap in terms of where we are and where they are. It's not just one answer that solves that problem," McDermott said, via Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. "We all have to, starting with me, we all have to continue asking ourselves the hard questions of the what-ifs and the whys and the hows. We as a staff have to get better and improve, we have to improve our roster, we have to improve our operation and what we do."

McDermott specifically noted the Chiefs' speed as something the Bills will have to match in the coming years.

"I think the speed element showed up on the field the other night," he said. "I don't think it takes a coach to realize that. Speed and size, that's what this game is -- speed, size and physicality."

The one that stands out to me is the drop by Hill early. White shaded him outside and Hill ran a corner route. While shading him outside by 3 yards, Hill was still able to beat him outside. So fast. It would be interested to see what they would be without Hill and Kelce. I know Kelce is a HOF. Hill might have an issue based on his past but not his impact on the game.

You are only going to mitigate a little speedster like Hill with physicality. You have to hit him every chance you get.

this offseason should be run and stop the run. Running the ball well keeps Hill and Kelce on the bench.

My 2 cents.

Never beating KC playing zone. Mahomes is too good at picking it apart. Kelce takes 8-9 yards at will in Zone. Hill will break a few short throws in huge gains.

The ONLY way you can really hope to slow them down is by playing more man but combining it with a LOT of pressure. Pass Rush has to get home and make Mahomes uncomfortable. You still run the risk of getting beat for the big plays, but if you're good enough, you hopefully stall a few drives and hopefully find ways to put up points on them.

The bigger thing in the game last week to me was the KC D being far better than i expected. really surprised how well the kept tight coverage.

Anyway... I'm not sure McD is willing to back off the cover 2 enough to do this, but i honestly think it's the best chance (and even then they might still just make too many plays to beat them)

On offense we need two good run blocking OL beside each other. That could be Dawkins and Feliciano, if we had another G and Williams returns, but there are other alignments that would be worth considering. A real TE and RB would be cool too.

On defense we need a DB/LB that can cover a TE. We also need a good slot CB, I think Levi is OK on the outside, not good but not terrible. Whenever he had to cover from the slot he got abused.

Oh and about Hill, you need to be a lot more aggressive on D with him. Get a good lick on him, clean but hard,every time he goes for the ball. Same for Kelce. Kelce will still haul it in, but make him know he is gonna need a chiropractor after the game.

IF we had had a running game that they would have had to account for, and IF the Archangel Gabriel had been healthy I think they would have been a lot less effective.

Yup. If you're Daboll and call play action on almost every pass play, you better have a run game to back it up, otherwise you get what a mediocre KC defense did to us.

you cant play zone coverage against speed, you d-backs are tethering while the WR's are running full speed, when a d-back finally realize who the QB is going to they usually have a couple of steps ahead of defender.

they need to get out of that soft zone coverage and get d-backs that can cover man to man....

When the finally went man to man, Tyreek Hill caught a 71 yard reception. They matched him up on T. Johnson and had him run away from him on a cross. He had 4 steps be the time he hit first down yardage.

None of our CB's maybe none in the league can keep up with him on that route.

We need a running back that can get 1000 yards, which means the leading rusher on the team isn't our quarterback.

A decent tight end could only help too.
