Give me a team that lacks talent but works for 60 minutes. Give me a team of guys who are just happy to be getting a chance over a team with a couple guys who can put the puck in the net but whine like little *****es.

Anderson looked solid in the net.

Meanwhile, Carter Hutton of Arizona gave up 8 goals in their opening night loss. They are here Saturday afternoon.

What the hell happened? That was a great game- solid performance all around. Okpo and Cozens looked great. Anderson made some incredible saves. Granted, it's one game, and this team has had plenty of hot starts only to fall apart, but that was a total 180 from what I expected.

Perhaps Eichel and Reinhart were the problem all along.

    Perhaps.

I'm a Nationals fan. For the longest time, Bryce Harper was the star player on the team. They would make the playoffs but always lost in the first round. After the 2018 season, the Nats failed to re-sign him and he ended up going to division rival Philadelphia. What happened in 2019? The Phillies missed the playoffs and the Nationals won the World Series. A lot of the players said the atmosphere was so much looser without Harper in the dugout/locker room, and that contributed to the win. So, it's certainly not unheard of for a star player to also be a distraction whose overall impact on the team is negative.

But, I see two key differences.
    1. The Nats had other top talent beyond Harper- Scherzer, Strasburg, Trea Turner, Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto come immediately to mind. The Sabres don't have that kind of talent.
    2. The Nats were winning with Harper- they just couldn't get over the hump. They won the division in 2016 and 2017, and missed the playoffs but had a winning record of 82-80 in 2018. The Sabres haven't won in over a decade.

Let's not get TOO excited by one game.

That said, I'm anxious to see the Eichel return. I smell Krebs in a sabres uniform soon

BTW Historian- the crowd was sparse but not nearly as sparse as your post on Facebook made it appear. Did you take that photo early or something?

They announced the crowd at just over 8,000 but that may have been paying customers over actual gate.

Back in 2009, I was in town for a friend's wedding. We had tickets to the Bills game. It was late October and there was also a Sabres game that Friday night. My dad and I tried to get tickets online, but they were crazy expensive from the resellers. We decided to show up and see if we could find scalpers- the tickets were so in demand that we couldn't even find a scalper who still had tickets. We ended up watching the game at a bar because it was impossible to get seats.

Somehow, we went from that, to getting at most 8k for a home opener. And you know attendance is going to get worse now that the opener is out of the way, especially if they go on a losing streak (which they likely will).

The Pegulas can't sell hockey to WNYers. Let that sink in for a moment...

Well that was a great game. Glad I could catch a stream. I'll give it a few games until I buy ESPN+. And then a few more games until I buy a new Casio Keyboard with speakers (I gave my old one to my son). I had a setting on the old one that was "Buffalo War Memorial Auditorium Hockey Organ." Yes, I would do my own "Let's Go, Buffalo!" and "Addams Family" organ music. I miss the old days, in the Golds, watching the French Connection. Great times back then.

FYI Center Ice is free for the first week of the season if you have DirecTV or cable. If you're going to buy ESPN+, buy it now because the price goes up from $49.99 a year to $69.99 in December. It's still a much better value than Center Ice or the old NHL.tv, but acting fast will save you some money.

You are spot on, Op. This town is hockey crazy.

The Pegula's showed up with $$ and zero knowledge of how to run a major pro sports franchise.
They just went along with what Darcy ( Sabres ) and Brandon ( Bills ) did, hoping it would still make them $$ and somehow win. It bombed. More mistakes followed until they finally got it right (blind luck) with the McBean combo for the Bills.

Adams and Granato deserve their shot, since they were left a dressing room that resembled the Pink Flamingo bathroom at 4am on a Friday night. Barf, crap and clogged pipes.

The stupid letter Kim obviously wrote after the Sabres layoffs ( Our need to maintain a certain lifestyle ) will never be forgiven in the minds of Sabres fans and rightfully so. How could one person be so insanely callous in a public letter ?

We as fans are resigned to them running the team but hope they stay the heck out of the way, for Adams and Granato's sake. I certainly did NOT want some retread who has bombed in multiple cities after a brief bit of success.

Let the kids play. I get this roster completely. I'm fine with some stability for now, even with the expected poor record. This is about growth and attitude which could pay dividends in a couple years or more.

Excellent, with money to spare for a new Casio Keyboard. Do! Do! Do-Do DO!

Hagg looks like a good addition.

Does anyone else see some Brian Holzinger in Vinnie Hinostroza?

Re: 2021-2022 Buffalo Sabres Gameday thread.

    Letter from Kyle Okposo

It's a bit early to discuss expectations.

The season is 82 games. We played one. There are going to be ups and downs, and we know that.

But there are two things I want Sabres fans to know they can expect from us moving forward.

Number one: We are going to work. You should see our effort every single night.

Number two: We are going to play a brand of hockey that's exciting to watch. Hopefully, we showed that last night.

I'll be honest, winning on opening night meant a lot to me. There has been a lot said about our team over the last five months. I just wanted to come out on the right foot and show people the way we know we're capable of playing...........................................................

Like he said it's only one game but they seem to be sick of hearing how embarrassing they will be without the crybabies.

Make sure you click the link and read the whole thing. I'd bet every dollar I ever own the guys in that locker room are glad Eichel and Samson are not there. Tell me this isn't a veiled shot at those crybabies!

And we fed off it. Something I'll remember from last night is how midway through the game, you could just feel the momentum shifting to our side. And we just kept pushing and pushing.

We were having fun. The fans were having fun. Everybody in the building meshed, I think, for the first time in a long time.
