Jordan Poyer looking for a contract extension in Buffalo

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Poyer isn't good anymore, or he should be cut, etc. But, is he worth another contract? Safeties tend to fall off right around Poyer's age. He's not stupid, he knows he has a very small window to cash in a final big pay day. If I'm Beane, I tell Poyer he has two choices: play out your current contract, and go from there, or retire. Unless Poyer is willing to sign a team friendly deal (I doubt it), he can play through next year and test the market.

He should play out his current contract IMO and then it's up to the Bills and the rest of the league if he's earned the increase he seeks. If he doesn't just sit it out 1st ..... which would be insane of course.

Look. It seems clear the Bills have to find a way to get this one last year out of Poyer, then he goes. He's clearly good, but he has drawn a bright line at where these star players (if you call him that) are going to be able to renegotiate for more money. He's going to land on the wrong side of that line, so the Bills will replace him after this season. The team will say lots of nice things about him, get him into camp, make him play this year, then let him go.

I understand his request, but I can't see how the Bills can afford it. At least this season. And, as FL pointed out, he's getting to that age where his skills level off (speed). It's disappointing because we all like the guy. But time moves on.

Poyer isn't worth big money.

He was a nice piece to help us get to where we are now but we need to develop someone behind him to take over or draft someone in 2023 or even go into FA and bring in a vet who wants a chance at a ring at a discounted price to take over as he takes his talents and big money contract elsewhere.

We all saw what the Patriots did with what many around the league thought were star players, we need and will do the same thing.

I don't know what to debate about and don't quite understand the argument to make Poyer "happy" by giving him more money. He signed his 2 year extension a year ago and is not really that under-paid by any measure. What does making him "happy" mean? For better performance this year? I have not heard any player not having the ultimate motivation to have his best year when he is on the last year of contract.

From Poyer's perspective, having a great year 2022 means he WILL get paid by someone for that last pay day. Unless ... he knows that he's not likely to top or repeat his 2021 year performance (Poyer is a 10 year NFL vet; he should know what he can or cannot do at this point). Therefore he's pushing for extension now (from Bills or anyone who might want to trade for him), leveraging his strong 2021 season.

From the Bills perspective, there is absolutely no motive to do so despite the local media calling for it (because Poyer is nice guy, media friendly). I mention the main reason in the first paragraph. Then there are cap reasons (next year Josh's number jumps, someone else has to take a back seat). There are replacement reasons, Jaquan Johnson is ready and I really like the Hamlin guy they drafted last year.

Both Poyer and Hyde are getting long on the tooth and cap. The Bills probably want to replace them one at a time, not both at the same time. I would argue one of the Hamlin and Johnson can step in this year in the starter role if needs to. And frankly, this is the business side we'll see more of down the road for the Bills. I can see it happening to Milano, White, Dawkins in a few years.

I think this hits the nail right on the head.

Both Poyer and Hyde will/need to be replaced by cheaper options thanks to the cap but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to replace both, the entire position group, at the same time. Also, the other guys you list are basically replaceable parts who just get cycled through as your longer window for being a Super Bowl caliber window is open thanks to having that franchise QB.

Because of the cap, a guy like Taiwan Jones is much more likely to have a lengthy Bills career than a guy like Tre White. Even though obviously White is the better player who has more of an impact but Jones is cheap and dependable in special teams play.

It seems to me that he got bad advice from his agent. Don't get me wrong- it worked out well for the team. We've been underpaying him for a while now, which means more cap space to pay other guys.

But, now other guys have gotten paid and there's no cap left. And he's on the wrong side of 30. He really should have been looking for a contract a couple of years ago. Unfortunately for him, it seems like he was trying to be a team player, which is what we always want from these guys, but it may have cost him a lot of money. Someone should probably give him a front-loaded contract, with the out years having a low base with a lot of incentives. It probably won't be us because we don't have the cap space.

McDermott signed him to almost 4 million a year contract for the next 4 years and he flourished in McDermott system. Those are his prove-it years. Then he got paid the next 2 years around top 12, 13 players at safety position. It is fair.

Neither Poyer nor Hyde really stands out individually as one of the top safeties in the league, But together, they are one of the top 5 tandems. That speaks more of the system than individual players.

I think I read in the Atlantic that he's the 24th highest paid safety in the NFL. Do you really think there are 23 safeties in the NFL better than him? I don't.

How are you going to feel about Beane if next year that list says did not re-sign Tremaine Edmunds?

I trust Beane to do what is best for the team. If he believes it’s in the best interest of the team to let Edmunds walk....I’m 100% fine with that. BEANE is the guy running the personal of the Bills and he has done an extremely good job.

My premise has ALWAYS been that the NFL experts, and ESPECIALLY the Bills GM and coaches do not agree with the crap that the haters heap on Edmunds. They LOVE him.

The MUCH BIGGER question is, how are you (and the haters) going to feel about Beane if before Edmunds contract runs out, he decides to EXTEND him for 5 or more years between $13M & $15M (and maybe more)???

The guys in-line for extensions are Knox (2023), Edmunds (2023), Oliver (2024), Davis (2024). I'm assuming Singletary is a goner, but if he takes another step like last year, well ...

Someone has to be let go is my guess.

I think Morse is way overpaid and I would trade him for value if possible and to free up cap space.

Poyer is coming back for the run for glory and the Bills need him to in this particular defense. I still think it works out fine. Don't know what happens next year, don't care, deal with it as it comes, if they come up short this year, they have other issues than Poyer.

Never been a fan of all in on one year, but I can deal with it if it's The Year at this point of my life.

Jordan Poyer says this young Buffalo Bills DB reminds him of himself


While the Bills have plenty of proven talent at cornerback and safety, the team also has many young defensive backs who will be battling for one or two roster spots this summer much like Poyer did years ago in his early NFL days.

One of those young players, Nick McCloud, reminds Poyer of himself.

In a podcast appearance on Inside the Garage, Poyer praised McCloud to hosts Kyle Hamilton, Cam Hart, KJ Wallace and Conor Ratigan--all Notre Dame alumni.

“Really good dude. Hard worker, man,” Poyer told the Inside the Garage hosts who all played with McCloud at Notre Dame. “I always tell him he always reminds me of myself. Just a guy maybe who’s been overlooked.
