    Deadspin article on Eichel- Ouch

    https://deadspin.com/maybe-jack-eich...guy-1848837660

The Knights are imploding, and according to this author, Eichel and our old friend Robin Lehner are two big reasons why. At the end of the article, he details how every team Jack Eichel has been a part of has come up short: World Juniors, BU, US national team, Sabres.

As I said in another thread, I'm a Washington Nationals fan. For years, Bryce Harper was our star player. During his tenure, the Nationals won the div 3 times, but never made it out of the first round of the playoffs. Before the 2019 season, we lost Harper to div rival Philadelphia. Everyone expected a disaster. At one point in May, the Nationals were sitting 12 games under .500 at 19-31. What happened? Well, if you follow baseball, you know. If you don't, the Nationals won the World Series in 2019. Philly hasn't made the playoffs since.

After the season, many players said the absence of Harper was a big reason why they won. Harper is intense and extremely competitive, even by pro athlete standards. Apparently, he was not fun to be around, he'd get extremely upset after losses, and would give teammates **** for every mistake, no matter how small. He had the whole team on edge. Once he left, it took some time, but players became more comfortable playing their own game and it created a really fun atmosphere, which they said was a big factor in winning.

I'm wondering if Eichel is similar. I'm wondering if his negativity was just toxic for everyone in the locker room. Obviously the Sabres aren't going to win a championship this weekend, but they have 73 points in 80 games so far this season, compared to just 37 points in a pandemic-shortened 56 games last season. They've been decent since January and actually have been playing well the last few weeks. On paper, they're much less talented without Eichel than with him. In reality, they play better when he's not around.

Sure, there are other factors, mostly coaching. But given that all of the teams that Eichel has been on have come up short, it seems likely that, despite his talent, his absence is having a positive effect.

In his last five games, Eichel has one goal. That’s it. He’s also been getting his balls gnawed off by whoever he’s out there against…. yikes!!!!

Better draft pick for the Sabres.

He can cry into his snapper purse.

Read that Vegas is 13-16-3 since he entered the lineup.

Tuch, Krebs, Levi and all those picks were a good return for flipping that locker room. It kicked in for the good a couple months back and more improvent coming.. Don't miss Eichel, Sam R and Risto. Risto has been labeled a flop by the Philadelphia press.

Now we can see an actual foundation of mostly young players going forward. Quinn and maybe Peterka coming up from Rochester. Figure out the Goalie situation.

    Encouraging.

I tried to tell you it would be addition by subtraction moving on from him. Eichel has been blessed with great talent but it takes more than that to be great and he doesn't have it. Add in how well Tuch has played and the potential of Krebs and the draft pick and that trade is going to be a grand slam for the Sabres.

Eichel may end up being the NHL's version of Ryan Leaf.

Before his injury, he was a point per game player for 3 years on some really awful Sabres teams. I think that gets him out of Ryan Leaf territory. But yeah, he's turning into a huge disappointment.

Zero points in almost 23 minutes of ice time tonight.

I think he'll be better next season, but I still won't miss him. We already have his production replaced by Tage Thompson.

He just never lived up to the hype he received as a prospect.

Tage is a late bloomer. Eichel is much more talented but Tage will overachieve expectations whereas Eichel will underachieve.

I believe you hit upon the point. The trade flipped the locker room in a big way.

Eichel is scoring some, but does not seem to be his old self.

Re: Deadspin article on Eichel- Ouch

    Another one:

    https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...-playoff-miss/

What's startling is that since Eichel returned to action on Feb. 16, the Golden Knights have a 14-14-5 record and Buffalo is 15-14-3, with a slightly better points percentage.

It's not that Eichel is the top player to blame in Vegas' failure, but he was a factor. And the fact is that when you're making $10 million against the cap and the team moved heaven and earth to acquire you… ya, you're going to be in focus when things go wrong as much as when they go right.

We're far enough along into Eichel's career without any team success to wonder what the heck is going on here. And while the messy rebuilding situation in Buffalo gave him some cover before, there is no hiding from Vegas' spotlight.

Eichel isn't a player in danger of moving this off-season, but when he returns in 2022-23 as Vegas' top centre again, he'll have to be ready for a monster year and to help Vegas climb back in. Anything short of that and we'll be having sharper conversations about his on-ice contributions.

Vegas is about to nose dive due to upcoming salary cap issues and a bare prospect cupboard.

Eichel will either be moved to their chagrin or will end his career on another sinking ship.

He's making $10 mil a year. He's not producing. He doesn't come through in tough situations. He's developing a reputation for not being a good teammate.

No one is going to trade for him.

Everyone thought the Sabres gave him away for peanuts, but it's not looking like that anymore. It looks like we unloaded a headache for two valuable players.
