NFLN Rachael Bonnetta (who is a newer addition to the network and she is adorable) did and interview with Matt Araiza before the draft.

He explains that the ball spins differently from a left footed kicker that gives him an advantage because returners are used to the ball flight from a righty.

It does not address how or if it makes a difference in “swirling winds” but, it’s interesting nonetheless.

Still not following. Why is this any more of a problem for Araiza than anyone else?

It's not more of a problem per se, but the tricky winds make it difficult to punt.

If he is our punter at the end of the day .... I will assume he can handle the wind .... of course maybe we should have tried him out where it's both cold and windy 1st. So can he beat out Haack that's the 1st question.

exactly. That's what camp is for. I just don't get why wind is being brought up. If anything the guy with the strongest leg should handle it best. I predict this guy will be a fan favorite. Not that you're rooting for punts but who doesn't want to see the returner start to back pedal and then the ball goes over his head and rolls for a mile

He kicks deep line drives. Not high arc hangers.

I think it's being brought up because it's difficult for any punter, much less a rookie.

It’s not that hard to understand, some punters figure out or can punt with the Buffalo winds i.e. Mooreman, some can’t. We’ve had some good punters and bad ones.

My point is we are going goofy over a punter that’s not used to kicking in crazy winds. Let’s hope he can, but there is a chance he can’t but let’s wait and see, that’s all.

Every year we see shanked punts because the wind moved the ball in that two feet. It's a little bigger issue on snaps. Not only as a punter, but as the holder for kicks and he's not used to fielding those kind of snaps. Doesn't matter how big his leg is if he doesn't know how to handle the wind, ask any long driver what happens when they pop one high. No, he doesn't need to be a Hall of Famer, but he needs to be competent enough to not cost the team a win in any aspect of his responsibilites.

Bojorquez was a left-footed punter. Not an issue for the returners then.

    Re: Punter Matt Araiza

Bill Bellichick believes left footed punters have an advantage. There is a different spin

I believe in that a lot more than the concerns about wind. This kid is going to be a great punter.

He has been training hang time. I saw a video of him kicking over a cross bar to get the height. The tweet said he boomed a 57 yard kick with 4.8s hang time. NFL average is 4.4s hang time. If he can do this repeatedly, Taiwan Jones and Siran Neal will be watching guys fair catch a lot of kics from right in front of them.

Yep, and right down the middle too.

I love the guy, but he's been punting in games for one year. Crazy strong leg, athletic, great attitude, but he has a ton to prove that he can master the art of the position.

Kicks left footed but is right handed. Can he not get his kicks from being blocked? Can put it inside the 20 (we rarely punt, and when we do it's from mid field.)? Can he kick it to one side of the field, with hang time, away from the fastest guy on the field?

The step from the Mountain West to the NFL for a guy with one year of experience is huge.

I'm rooting for him, but he might be a longshot to make the team. Rookies make rookie mistakes. My not be worth the risk during a run to the SB.
