2022 NHL Draft Lottery: How To Watch, Sabres Odds & Open Thread

    The Event
WHAT: The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery to determine the order of selection for the first 16 picks in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft to be held in July

WHERE: NHL Network’s studios in Secaucus, N.J.

    WHEN: Tuesday, May 10th, 2022 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. ET

HOW: Results of the Lottery will be announced shortly after 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN+, SN, SN NOW, TVAS.

    The Process
The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery will consist of two drawings: one for the No. 1 pick and one for the No. 2 pick. Once the top two picks have been established, clubs will be slotted in the order of their finish in the regular-season standings.

In addition, a team only can move up 10 selections if it wins one of the lottery draws, a change announced by the NHL in March 2021 and thus only the top 11 teams in lottery are eligible to receive the No. 1 selection in the 2022 draft.

    The Odds
    1. Montreal Canadiens, 18.5 percent
    2. Arizona Coyotes, 13.5 percent
    3. Seattle Kraken, 11.5 percent
    4. Philadelphia Flyers, 9.5 percent
    5. New Jersey Devils, 8.5 percent
    6. Chicago Blackhawks, 7.5 percent
    7. Ottawa Senators, 6.5 percent
    8. Detroit Red Wings, 6.0 percent
    9. Buffalo Sabres, 5.0 percent
    10. Anaheim Ducks, 3.5 percent
    11. San Jose Sharks, 3.0 percent
    12. Columbus Blue Jackets, 2.5 percent
    13. New York Islanders, 2.0 percent
    14. Winnipeg Jets, 1.5 percent
    15. Vancouver Canucks, 0.5 percent
    16. Vegas Golden Knights, 0.5 percent

The Buffalo Sabres could end up with two picks in the top 16. The Vegas Golden Knights’ first round pick was part of the Jack Eichel trade made this season. If the Golden Knights’ pick is in the top 10 though, they would keep it and the Sabres would get their first-round pick in the 2023 draft instead.

Would Adams consider packaging 2 of these 3 picks and trading to one of these teams that has a lot of needs (Philadelphia, Arizona) to jump up?

9 and 16 should pick them up a legit prospect at 9 and I feel you go for talent at 16 and hope he pans out. Apparently it's a deep draft so th sabres should really add to their pool

Presently, Tankathon.com has Buffalo taking two players from the USNTDP: Frank Nazar(RW, 5'9"/163; he's a Michigan commit)at 9 and Isaac Howard(LW, 5'10"/174; he'll be playing for Minnesota-Dulith). As for Bleacher Report, they have us selecting C Matthew Savoie(Winnipeg Ice/WHL)at 9 and D Lian Bichsel(Lechsands IF(SWE) at 16. PLUS, here's a name that might ring a bell: Former Sabre Dave Snuggerud's son Jimmy is also draft eligible. AND he's projected to go in the 1st round.

I want Savoie and Lambert. I'd be happy with Nazar.

It's worth noting almost no one in this draft is NHL ready

Yes... trading up with the flyers.. the Sabres would get at worst the 2nd best defensemen Juricek... would have to get to 3rd overall to get the best defenseman Nemec

One of sukie's high school buddies reminded us of the Sabres 1982 draft where they also had 3 picks - the 3rd was # 16. In that draft they got Housley, Paul Cyr (with 100 mph shot), and Dave Andreychuk at #16.

Snuggerud I remember. Sabres RW taken in 1987 supplemental draft. He played for team USA in 1988 Olympics. His one best NHL season was his first with the Sabres where he went 14-16-30. It was downhill after that. Traded to San Jose 2 seasons later for a marginally better Wayne Presley, Snuggerud's production fizzled fast. He apparently is a very good science teacher back in his home state of Minnesota.

Here is a terrible mock draft for the Sabres, but they have Jimmy Snuggerud going to St. Louis. That would be a good landing spot for him.

I see the Athletic has them flipped:

Look throughout the organization. The Kraken only have one right-handed shooting prospect defenseman, and that is last year’s fourth-round pick Ville Ottavainen. Drafting David Jiricek would give them another right-handed shot with a 6-foot-3 frame. He’s spent the last two seasons playing against older, more physically mature competition in the Extraliga, the highest division of Czech hockey. The 18-year-old finished the regular season with five goals and 11 points in 29 games after scoring nine points in 34 contests a year earlier. Jiricek is considered to be the No. 1 defensive prospect in the draft, according to The Athletic’s Corey Pronman. Knowing the Kraken might add him to a young core that already features Matty Beniers, Ryker Evans, Ryan Winterton and Ottavainen potentially offers more promise. Of course, the Kraken could go in any number of directions. They could go with another right-handed shooting defenseman in Simon Nemec or a forward. Especially if Logan Cooley is available at No. 4 when the draft arrives. —Ryan S. Clark

    5. Philadelphia Flyers: Simon Nemec, RHD, Nitra (SLOVAKIA)

While the Flyers could certainly use a dynamic, top-of-the-lineup forward, Nemec strikes me as the best combination of talent plus need available to them at No. 5. Nemec absolutely has top-pair potential, given his well-rounded skillset and the fact that he’s already thriving against men in Slovakia. Philadelphia scouts likely will be impressed by his hockey IQ (always something they prioritize in their evaluations), and his scoring explosion in the Slovakian Elite League playoffs (17 points in 19 games) speaks to his offensive upside. The fact that he’s a right-handed defenseman is just a bonus, but it’s an important bonus given the dearth of them in the NHL and within the Flyers’ system, especially given the legitimate concerns surrounding Ryan Ellis’ health. Nemec would serve as a potential high-end solution to a roster issue they’ve been trying to solve for years. —Charlie O’Connor

Pipeline picks for 3-4 years down the road.

9,16 and another at the end of Round 1 (Florida).
    We don't even have pictures
    Just memories to hold
    That grow sweeter each season

You're not restocking the pipeline for an NHL team that just set a historic league record for missing the play-offs. The Sabres now own that record for missing the play-offs in the longest consecutive streak. No one should be protected from being upgraded.

The Lightning are restocking the shelves, not the Sabres.
