I need to see another season of Knox playing well first. He's made mostly wide open plays JMO.

It’s looking more and more like this year is our window. That’s it.

So no chance of winning it all and regrouping in a few years under a new group of talent ?? Oh ye of little faith.

Re: Dawson Knox next contract just went up

Knox averages slightly more catches per season, slightly more ypc, and 2 more TD's per year than Njoku so that contract is probably a good indication of what the market says Dawson is worth.

The window is always open when you have the QB.

    Its closed when you don’t.

See the Buffalo Bills the past 30 years as an example.

    I like Njoku.

That's an idiotic overpayment on a contract for him based off his production.

But now that maybe Austin Hooper is out of the way in Cleveland, he'll get more of a chance to show why he'll be paid that amount of money. Plus Stefanski does like TEs in the offense.

Still don't like that contract though and don't see it indicative of market trend however.

    Yawn..

I don't really agree with that.

Like all good teams, some hard choices will be made. You need to draft well to replace guys.

But the cap is going to jump too.

I think we are set up for a good run

Re: Dawson Knox next contract just went up

Depends. If he plays well, the tag is decent value. If he's not worth the tag, there should be an overlap between what he wants and what the Bills are offering.

This season the TE tag is $10.8, it'll go up a little next season but since it's based on the average of the last 5 it will increase less than the expected cap inflation, so maybe $11.x. It's much cheaper than the top TEs, which is good because Knox isn't a top TE yet. But it's also cheaper than pretty much every new good TE deal.

If a deal gets done it's probably a 3 year deal (maybe a 4th fake year for cap purposes) a little above the tag. Without a deal I think we could see a tag. One issue with that is that safety has a similar dynamic in terms of tag price, and they might want to use it on Poyer (that'd be rough).

To some extent maybe, but look at the teams that squandered their windows with mega QB contracts and were left with just the mega QB. They were still theoretically considered contenders because of the QB but weren't really going anywhere. The QB's effectiveness is diminished. You need the supporting cast.

On the plus side, the cap has gone up and we have Beane. Beane is focused on the core, and seems to have a feel for what positions/players can come and go around them. It's going to come down to Beane sustaining the right core of players around Allen, but he knows that and seems to be doing exactly that atm.

Knox is nearly there, but even if he becomes a great tight end and prices himself out of our range, you can't really say losing him closes our window. We won't be able to keep everyone, but the key is keeping the right ones and replacing the others with capable younger talent. That's doable with a good GM, and we have one.

On the other hand, to agree with you, the window instantly closes if Allen goes down, imho, with our current backups. I can see the backups, with a good team around them getting us to the playoffs, but not for a deep run.

So I guess I'd say the QB is critical, but still needs a team around them, and the Bills aren't on the edge of the cliff yet in terms of cap/talent level, to worry about the window closing with an intact Allen.

Green Bays window has been open since 1992. They have 2 Super Bowl victories in that time.

Maybe the fact that they have 'only' achieved one title per QB over that time span despite having arguably the best player in the league at 'the most important position' every season, year in and year out, is an indication that 'windows' are about more than the quarterback.

True. But they consistently had the most important piece that keep them in contention.
