90 Buffalo Bills players in 90 days: DE Boogie Basham

    https://www.buffalorumblings.com/202...-boogie-basham

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Basham enters the second year of his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth a total of $5,624,943 overall. Of that total, $2,366,547 is guaranteed. For the 2022 season, Basham carries a cap hit of $1,278,396, with a dead-cap charge of $2,003,830 if he’s released or traded.

2021 Recap: Basham essentially redshirted for much of his rookie year, as he was inactive on game days more often than he played. While he played in just eight games during the regular season, he did manage more sacks than veteran Jerry Hughes, who played more than twice the number of snaps that Basham did. In the regular season, Basham made 18 tackles, four tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks. In the playoffs, Basham appeared in both games, notching six tackles and a sack.

Positional outlook: Basham stands to benefit the most from both Hughes and Mario Addison departing to sign with the Houston Texans. Greg Rousseau, Basham, and A.J. Epenesa are all recent Buffalo draft picks who will vie for time opposite Von Miller, whom the team signed this spring. Shaq Lawson re-signed, as well, adding another veteran presence to the young group. Mike Love and Kingsley Jonathan round out the group.

2022 Offseason: Basham is healthy and he’s participated in all offseason activities to date.

Supposedly reshaped his body from bulk to muscle. Shed 15-20 lbs. Reports from mini-camp stated he's much quicker.

    We'll see.

If we don't have the best defensive line in the league I'll be disappointed.

Basham, Rousseau and Epenesa better be hanging with Von Miller for hours each day in camp. I was actually pleased that they brough back Shaq Lawson for a good rotational DE, just in case the 3 kids aren't fully ready for more snaps.

I like the interior, with Phillips, Settle and Jones signing up. That needed a refresh in a bad way.

Every team in the league needs DE help and Shaq Lawson was cut like 3 times. It makes me worry what he has left.

He's a hedge option in the rotation on a 1 year deal. Not making him out to be anything more.

He won't make it if he can't contribute in a meaningful way.

For sure but he is essentially the hedge bet if the 2nd year guys don't develop, meaning we will need him. Could have been just scheme/cost why it didn't work elsewhere but I think it is a legitimate concern.

Worked for Bruce Smith, not that anyone expects Boogie to be anywhere close to that level.

Didn’t Mike Love already round out a group back in the late 60s?

90 Buffalo Bills players in 90 days: LB Tyrel Dodson

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Dodson signed a one-year contract extension in February, a pact that totals $895,000 overall. There are no guarantees in the contract.

2021 Recap: Dodson played in 16 games last year, though he was not called on to start any like he was in 2020. He instead spent most of his time on special teams, where he played 277 snaps, or 67% of the team total. On defense, Dodson only played 78 total snaps. He made 15 tackles on the season.

Positional outlook: Dodson is one of ten players listed at linebacker on the roster, though one (Von Miller) is going to be more defensive end than linebacker. With Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano set to take the majority of the starting snaps, Dodson will vie for a reserve role with Baylon Spector, Terrel Bernard, Joe Giles-Harris, Tyler Matakevich, Marquel Lee, and Andre Smith.

2022 Offseason: Dodson is healthy and he has participated in all OTAs to date.

Scheme/cost when other teams tried using him as one of their two primary DE's. His best use at this point is rotational secondary option.

Lawson was not a bad DE, he was just not a top notch DE with enough speed or power to be one of the top 2. He can set an edge, won't be out of position, will occasionally get to a QB on a long play, hold his place on the field. His price tag outpaced his value, and the fresh talent coming into the league every year has just put his career into perspective imho, so he is what he is, for how much you can get him for. It's happened to a lot of players who are taking the one year deals. They're just settling into their new values to keep their careers alive as role players.

90 Buffalo Bills players in 90 days: RB James Cook

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Cook signed his rookie contract, a four-year pact worth a total of $5,832,057 overall. For the 2022 season, Cook carries a cap hit of $1,060,374. Buffalo is on the hook for a dead-cap charge of $2,391,590 if he doesn’t make the roster. That number represents the entirety of the guarantees in Cook’s deal.

2021 Recap: Cook saw greater usage as a senior than he had in any prior season of his collegiate career, and he made the most of the uptick in touches. He set career highs in carries (113), rushing yards (728), rushing touchdowns (7), receptions (27), receiving yards (284), and receiving touchdowns (4) en route to helping the Bulldogs win the National Championship. He appeared in all 15 of Georgia’s games, starting three.

Positional outlook: Cook joins a backfield full of returning players—with one exception. Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, Taiwan Jones, and Reggie Gilliam all return, with veteran Duke Johnson serving as the veteran newcomer of the group. Raheem Blackshear signed as an undrafted free agent.

2022 Offseason: Cook is healthy and he has attended all OTAs to date.

2022 Season outlook: Cook is exactly what Buffalo lacked in the backfield. He is explosive (4.42-second 40-yard dash, 10’4” broad jump at the combine), he is a talented receiver (67 receptions for 730 yards and six touchdowns in his college career), and he doesn’t have a ton of mileage on his body (just 297 touches in his four-year college career).

Re: 90 Buffalo Bills players in 90 days: DE Boogie Basham

90 Buffalo Bills players in 90 days: CB Nick McCloud

Acquired: UDFA signing; signed to practice squad on 11/8/2022 following initial departure

Financial situation (per Spotrac): McCloud signed a reserve/futures deal with the Bills in January. That two-year contract calls for him to make a total of $1.765 million, none of which is guaranteed. Should he make the roster this year, McCloud will carry a cap hit of $825,000.

2021 Recap: McCloud signed with Buffalo following the draft, and he spent the offseason with the club. He did not make the 53-man roster, and he was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Bengals after Buffalo waived him at the end of August. He appeared in two games with the Bengals—their Week 4 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and their Week 6 victory over the Detroit Lions—without accruing any statistics. He played special teams in both games, amassing ten total snaps. In the game against the Lions, he played 14 snaps on defense without being targeted or making a tackle. The Bengals waived him on November 4 and then Buffalo signed him to their practice squad on November 8. That’s where he remained for the rest of the 2021 season.

Re: 90 Buffalo Bills players in 90 days: DE Boogie Basham

Positional outlook: McCloud rejoins a solid secondary group that has a lot of familiar faces. Tre’Davious White, Siran Neal, Taron Johnson, Cam Lewis, Olaijah Griffin, Dane Jackson, and Tim Harris were all with the club last year. Buffalo added Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford through the draft, and they signed Travon Fuller and Ja’Marcus Ingram as rookie free agents following the draft.

2022 Offseason: McCloud is healthy and he’s participated in OTAs to date. All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer said that McCloud reminds him a lot of himself as a young player.

2022 Season outlook: McCloud is a dark-horse candidate for the last spot in the secondary when final rosters are made at the end of August. He’s a great athlete whose biggest knock coming out of college was that the tape didn’t necessarily match up to the traits. After spending his first year in two different defensive systems, and working with two highly successful teams in the Bills and the Bengals, perhaps McCloud has found that mythical “it” needed to take his game to the next level.
