I don't understand this point.
Buffalo had 12 OT wins, one of the best totals in the league. Florida and the Islanders 6 each, which means the new system allowed the Sabres to pick up six additional points on the other two teams that the old system wouldn't have given them. Under the old rules Buffalo would have finished farther out of the race. (If you take away the manufactured point and just let the outcomes stand as 1pt each ties, NYI=87 points, FLA=86 points, BUFF=79).
Unless you are saying the rule change should have eliminated ties completely, but even then all three teams would have ended up with 42 total wins and 84 points, and the first tiebreaker (regular wins) would have had the Sabres behind the other two still (36-36-30).
If anything the manufactured point helped Buffalo stay in the race longer.
