Great point .... they probably won't replace him.

    That would suck.

Tampa 2 is not going away.

McDermott brought in Holcomb to be his defensive assistant for McDermott’s scheme which is the tampa 2.

Holcomb coached this system before in Carolina with McDermott.

My guess is McDermott didn’t like the way the defense has been called in big games.

Frazier would probably argue that he couldn’t be as aggressive as he wanted because we couldn’t get to the QB fast enough without Von.

I think it's gonna be tweaked incredibly ..... we don't have the personnel .... maybe Frazier is taking the year off because he's losing Edmunds and Poyer.

Holcomb also reunites with Bills head coach Sean McDermott as the two were on staff together in Carolina. Holcomb was the linebackers coach for the Panthers from 2013-2017 when McDermott was the defensive coordinator from 2011-2016.

Would love to hear his honest opinion of Edmunds. We'll probably get some indication before the end of March.

Too bad we missed out on Vic Fangio and Ejiro Evero...

Names to watch for: Sean Desai, Jim Leonhard.

Great news to move on from Frazier though.

This was actually something I suspected would happen (i.e. no immediate post-season news on Frazier, but then they would possibly part ways after a few weeks as a sign of respect to Frazier).

Re: Leslie Frasier steps away from coaching for a year

They never really ran a traditional Tampa 2 under Frazier anyway, they modified the shell to incorporate a safety closer to the line of scrimmage to double-down on the MLBs responsibilities, ran more zone-under coverage, and had to account for a nickel back.

The key to a Tampa 2 is the MLB, so hopefully this is not only an admission of the failures of coaching but also the player on the field.

Would love to see more Wide 9 from the defensive line and man coverage on the boundaries plugged in.

It’s a one year job. Leslie returning in 2024 so speculating on a new hire is silly.

    unless Leslie WILL not return,

as far as not firing him or this announcement earlier, Bills would gain 2 third rd picks had Leslie taken a job elsewhere. Those jobs dried up… now this.

Re: Leslie Frasier steps away from coaching for a year

So he comes back in 2024...just in time for the playoffs next year.

    Anyway

    1. I hope he's Ok.

    2. Jim Leonhard is still available, he and the Eagles "mutually agreed" that he wouldn't be hired as DC, whatever that means. Leonhard has learned from a number of people, including Rex, early in his career, and Dave Aranda. He can run a variety of defenses and draws from a number of philosophies.

    3. Most likely, Holcomb takes over the DC position, but McD ends up calling the defense. And if so, McD would do himself well to go back and review game footage from the old Jim Johnson's defenses.

Re: Leslie Frasier steps away from coaching for a year

I have two different thoughts on this, either they brought in Holcomb to push him out or it was purely to assist and Frazier got butt hurt!!

I hope he’s not ill, but the I’ll be back in 2024 is curious.

Just give me a defense who can hold Mahomes under 30 points and build up our offense.

He doesn't have a contract so he won't be back here.

I wouldn’t hold your breath on a scheme change as long as McD is coach

Holcomb took over as Carolina's defensive coordinator following the team's decision to part ways with Phil Snow. The unit made significant progress under his watch, particularly in the run game and creating pressure on the quarterback. A number of players took their game to the next level this season, which is a credit to not only them but to Holcomb.

    That was my first thought.
