    You got that right.

When I hit 64 years old, I made a spreadsheet that detailed expected SS payments for every month I would start benefits between when I hit 64 all the way to 66 & two months (my full retirement age).

I don’t have a cushy federal government pension (and I have no issue paying for yours....I respect people that make the decision to enter the military and the pension is one of the perks that encourages youngsters to do so) so I had to calculate how much I needed to live on and how much I would have to pull from my 401K.

Like I said, I was pretty fed up with working and each trade show I had to endure, and road trips that took more and more out of me, made me long for retirement. All that I needed to do was ensure that I could retire with dignity, in the lifestyle my wife and I wanted.

The difference for me to wait until 66 & 2 months (you are spot on....the difference between 63-65 is pretty hefty) did not make much sense. I used a simple formula....how long would it take to make up the difference in each month's benefit as compared to the 14 months of payments I would receive by retiring at 65 as opposed to full retirement age.

For me, that was about 15 YEARS.

Since we already put our kiddies through college (with no debt...the accomplishment and gift to my two daughters that I am most proud of and they are most appreciative of)...the mortgage was paid off...had no car loans, and zero debt of any kind....with a very modest budget that does, in fact have us enjoying exactly the lifestyle we want...it was a no brainer.

Hope you are enjoying your retirement as much as I am.

    Happy Birthday kgun!
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.
