    Bills Need a Philosophy Change

Good article, lover the Uber drive!”

“ “Why is it easy for a girl from Buffalo to get a boyfriend? … Because they’re not expecting a ring.”

“The time is now for McDermott to stop coaching like a man paralyzed by fear on fourth down in January!”

Re: Bills Need a Philosophy Change

I subscribe to Tyle Dunne’s site. He has great long form essays.

There are a lot of very good points in this essay.

I agree with him that fearless, dynamic offence using all of Josh Allen’s powers (while he still has them….his playing style is not going see him still on the field at 45 years old) and to that end….
    __________

“So, it’s simple: The entire organization must lean into what it does have — Allen — and function as an unstoppable offensive juggernaut that wants to score 50 points every Sunday.”
    __________

“It's time for those in charge to do the same thing. Off the field. The Bills now need to parlay a strong March into, you know, drafting a wide receiver before Round 4. This is the team’s most important draft since ’18. On the field. Step one is admitting you have a problem. Five playoff losses have supplied more than enough proof. Seanball needs to be terminated. The time is now for McDermott to stop coaching like a man paralyzed by fear on fourth down in January.

The identity of the Bills needs to change.

The good news? It absolutely can.

    Here’s how.”
    __________

“Again… and again… and again… and again the head coach is a paranoid actuary when it’s tournament time. He forgets Josh Allen is his quarterback — not Trent Edwards — and essentially informs his offensive players he does not believe in them.”

    __________

“Next season, the Bills need to be a team obsessed with running up the score. Not one that overanalyzes field position. We saw spurts of this when Daboll was in town. Those 2020 Bills could be joyfully ruthless.”
    __________

“Adopting such a mentality helps this spring, too. The Bills must end their quest for more Boogie Bashams and, for the love of God, take a wide receiver in the first or second round. Load up. Add as many legitimate weapons as possible and figure the rest out later instead of trying to delicately piece a jigsaw puzzle together. Throughout his tenure, Beane has repeated how crucial it is for the Bills to build through the draft, and he’s right. You are what you eat. These drafts continue to reflect a defensive team with a defensive coach trying to win low-scoring games in the January cold. Here’s a quick sampling of the wide receivers Buffalo realistically passed on: Christian Watson (2022), George Pickens (2022), Elijah Moore (2021) and the one that still leaves a mark is selecting offensive lineman Cody Ford over A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf in 2019.”
    __________

“Neither acquisition should stop the Bills from drafting a wide receiver.

The main problem isn’t who’s lining up opposite Diggs, isn’t a matter of taking out a small loan to lure a big-ticket item. Anyone who thinks Odell Beckham Jr. is the player who’ll catapult the Bills to glory probably is slotting the Anchor Bar in at No. 1 on their wing power rankings. Buffalo needs to correctly use its weapons. Who cares if Hines wasn’t fully up to speed on the playbook? Scheme up a play that takes full advantage of his gifts.“
    __________

“Ego is extracted and vaporized for the greater good. Twenty-three years later, McDermott is living the inverse. The second it became clear that Allen was a special talent — I’d pinpoint it around October 2020 — all rules should’ve changed in Buffalo.

Third down becomes the new second down.

The thought of punting is akin to kissing your sister and you spend approximately 2.3 seconds even discussing college punting prospects.
Playoff pressure is liberating. Not paralyzing.”
    __________

“There’s still work to do. Let’s all say it out loud one more time: Draft a wide receiver.”
    __________

Drafting an IOL or DL or CB or LB in the first round will be more of the same defensive crouch that recent drafts have “reflected a defensive team with a defensive coach trying to win low-scoring games in the January cold” and continue “turtling into the fetal position”.

Yes, it IS time to have a “philosophy change”....and if we see anything besides an offensive skill player being drafted in the first round, we’ll know that change is probably not coming.

A great...beefy read. I agree...been saying it for years now. Balls to the wall on defense would help too.

Thing is atm....I have no confidence McDermott can evolve. Always says he will and does not. That's 6 years of pattern. Hope he does...it's critical...but I'm dubious and Allen imho....is going to run out of luck in not getting damaged.

    We'll see what happens.
