Mike McCarthy back at practice after appendectomy
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is back at practice this morning, less than 48 hours after an appendectomy.
McCarthy needed surgery to address acute appendicitis on Wednesday afternoon but returned to the facility this morning, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.
Even when he wasn’t at practice, McCarthy was talking to assistant coaches on the phone and watching practice tape after the outpatient procedure.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson out of concussion protocol, Browns won’t name QB for Sunday
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters at his Friday press conference that Thompson-Robinson has cleared the concussion protocol after a pair of limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday.
Thompson-Robinson was named the team’s starter after Deshaun Watson went on injured reserve, but Stefanski has been mum about the team’s plans for Sunday all week. He remained so on Friday and said that he plans to go up until game-time before making the call.
Eagles hoped Christian Elliss would clear waivers, but six teams claimed him
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni confirmed today that the Eagles were hoping Elliss would clear waivers so they could bring him back to the practice squad, and then elevate him to the gameday roster on Sunday so he could continue contributing on special teams as he has. Unfortunately for the Eagles, six teams put in claims for Elliss: Patriots, Cardinals, Titans, Falcons, Broncos and Dolphins. The Patriots had the worst record and therefore the highest waiver priority of those six teams, so they got Elliss.
Seahawks sign QB Sean Mannion to practice squad
With only two quarterbacks on the roster after Brett Rypien signed with the Jets earlier this week, the Seahawks have added another veteran signal-caller.
Seattle signed Sean Mannion to its practice squad, the team announced on Friday.
Mannion, 31, has had two previous stints with the Seahawks. He was with the club in 2021 for training camp and was on the practice squad with the team last season.
A Rams third-round pick in 2015, Mannion has appeared in 14 career games with three starts. He last appeared in a regular-season game for the Vikings back in 2021, completing 22-of-36 passes for 189 yards with a touchdown in a loss to the Packers.
Amit Patel’s lawyer cites gambling addiction for embezzlement from Jaguars
Former Jaguars executive Amit Patel allegedly embezzled more than $22 million from the team. His lawyer blames it on a gambling addiction.
Specifically, attorney Alex King said Thursday, via ESPN.com, that Patel manipulated the team’s virtual credit card program “to gamble on Daily Fantasy Sports” with FanDuel and DraftKings, and that “approximately 99% of the misappropriated funds” were related to gambling losses.
Zach Wilson named the AFC offensive player of the week
Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has been called a lot of things over his three years in the NFL and many of them haven’t been complimentary, but that’s not the case on Wednesday.
The Jets announced that the NFL has named Wilson the offensive player of the week in recognition of his performance against the Texans in Week 14.
Wilson returned to the starting lineup after two games on the bench and turned in the best performance of his NFL career. Wilson went 27-of-36 for 301 yards and two touchdowns as the Jets went from being tied 0-0 at halftime to beating their visitors 30-6 at MetLife Stadium.
Owners to vote on expansion of minimum international games from four to eight - NBC Sports
The NFL’s international experiment continues to expand. As it should.
Via NFL Network, owners will vote Tuesday on a proposal that would increase the minimum number of international games from four to eight. Given that the annual Jaguars home game falls beyond the league’s initiative, that would mean a minimum of nine games every year not on American soil.
They should run it all the way to 16, frankly. If the NFL will be sticking with 17 regular-season games, it’s imperative from a competitive-balance standpoint that all teams have eight true home games, eight true road games, and one neutral-site game. Today’s proposal, if successful (and it will be), would get the league more than halfway to the magic number of 16.
That’s the best long-term solution for the NFL. Moving a team to England or Germany raises too many issues. Export six games to England, six to Germany, and four elsewhere.
Giants designate Darren Waller for return from injured reserve
The Giants offense could get a key part back in the lineup as soon as this Sunday.
The team announced on Thursday that tight end Darren Waller has been designated for return from injured reserve. Waller will practice with the team and can be activated at any point in the next 21 days, but he won’t be able to return if he is not activated in that window.
Waller has been out since Week Eight with a hamstring injury, but his importance to the offense is underscored by the fact that he remains second on the team with 36 catches and 384 receiving yards.
If the NFL wants to turn the page on a player criticizing bad officiating, the NFL probably should think twice about fining a player for criticizing bad officiating.
Regardless, Big Shield has struck back at Browns defensive end Myles Garrett. Via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the league has fined Garrett $25,000 for his criticism of officials after last weekend’s win over the Jaguars.
“The officiating was a travesty today,” Garrett said during his post-game press conference. “It was honestly awful. And the fact that they’re letting them get away with hands to the face, holding, false starting — I know they called a couple, but damn, they could have called it all game. And [there was] the one that cost us down on the 2-yard line.
