With Ben Johnson staying as Detroit’s offensive coordinator for 2024, one of the Lions’ assistant coaches could head elsewhere to become a play-caller.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand will interview for the Buccaneers offensive coordinator vacancy.

Engstrand joined Detroit’s staff in 2020 after working in the XFL as an offensive coordinator for the DC Defenders. He was retained under head coach Dan Campbell in 2021 as an offensive quality control coach. He then became the tight ends coach/passing game coordinator in 2022 before shifting to just passing game coordinator in 2023.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sounded as if he was undecided about Mike McCarthy’s future immediately after the team’s loss to the Packers’ in the wild-card round. The Cowboys announced three days later that McCarthy was returning for a fifth season.

In his first interview with beat reporters since his decision to keep McCarthy, Jones said he didn’t see a need to “disrupt” the offseason to get a better result in 2024.

That despite Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh and Mike Vrabel among the veteran coaches on the market.

Jones he met with McCarthy for more than three hours following the Cowboys’ quick exit from the playoffs, and that was long enough to decide McCarthy deserved another year after three consecutive 12-win regular seasons.

It looks like Ben Johnson isn’t the only offensive coordinator staying put after drawing interest from teams looking for a head coach.

Albert Breer of SI.com reports that Bobby Slowik has agreed to a new deal with the Texans. The terms of that deal are not known, but Breer reports that it comes with a “significant raise” after helping the Texans to a division title and playoff win in his first season with the team.

Shortly before he was set to meet with the Commanders on Tuesday, word broke that Johnson would remain with the Lions for at least another season.

He made such a seamless transition that Williams has increased his value has he heads to free agency.

“It was impressive,” Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said, via Geoff Hobson of the team website. “He showed he’s versatile, which will play well over time with him.”

Tobin said he was uncertain of Williams’ future. It’s likely, though, that another team gives Williams more money than the Bengals are willing to offer.

Ravens name Zach Orr defensive coordinator

The team announced that they have promoted Zach Orr to the position a day after Mike Macdonald left the team to become the head coach of the Seahawks. Orr was the team’s inside linebackers coach.
Orr played linebacker in Baltimore for three seasons, but his career ended early because he was diagnosed with a congenital spinal condition after the 2016 season. Orr joined John Harbaugh’s staff as a defensive analyst in 2017, moved to Jacksonville for the 2021 season and then returned to Harbaugh’s staff in the inside linebackers role in 2022.

Dave Canales expects Ejiro Evero to remain as Panthers defensive coordinator - NBC Sports

Dave Canales had to tangle with the Panthers defense twice last season when he was the Buccaneers offensive coordinator in 2023 and he’s planning on having the same guy run the defense in his first season as the head coach for Carolina.

Ejiro Evero was a head coaching candidate for the Panthers and other teams off the back of the work he did running the defenses in Denver and Carolina the last two years. That work would make him a desirable candidate to run defenses for other teams, but Canales said at his introductory press conference on Thursday that he expects Evero to remain with the team as their defensive coordinator.

Report- Patriots will hire Alex Van Pelt as their offensive coordinator

Jerod Mayo has reportedly found the offensive coordinator for his first staff as the Patriots head coach.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Patriots will hire Alex Van Pelt for the job. Van Pelt was fired by the Browns last month after spending four seasons with the team.
Van Pelt also served as the quarterbacks coach in Cleveland and he’s served in that role for the Bengals, Packers, Buccaneers, and Bills as well over the course of his career. He also played quarterback in the NFL for a decade and that experience all figures to be essential to his role in 2024 because the Patriots need a big improvement in quarterback play.

Jim Harbaugh- I want to work hard so Justin Herbert’s hard work can be realized

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh called quarterback Justin Herbert a “crown jewel” early in his introductory press conference on Thursday and he’s not the first person to marvel at Herbert’s football ability.
Herbert’s first two NFL head coaches haven’t been able to turn that ability into enough wins, however, and that’s a big part of the reason why Harbaugh will be the third one to get a crack at hitting it big with the quarterback. Later in the press conference, Harbaugh said that the drive to make sure that he succeeds on that front is a big motivator for him as he gets used to his new job.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones (quad) and running back Isiah Pacheco (toe/ankle) were full participants after being estimated as non-participants Wednesday.
Linebacker Willie Gay (neck) and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (calf) were upgraded to full participation after being estimated as limited Wednesday.
Receiver Kadarius Toney (personal) exited the report.
Offensive guard Joe Thuney (pectoral) and defensive end Charles Omenihu (knee) were the only players who didn’t participate Thursday. Omenihu tore an ACL in the AFC Championship Game and will go on injured reserve, while Thuney’s status remains uncertain for the Super Bowl.
