49ers tight end George Kittle expected a fine from the NFL this week and he got one.
Kittle displayed a t-shirt with “F— Dallas” written on it while celebrating a touchdown by teammate Jordan Mason in last Sunday’s 42-10 win over the Cowboys. Kittle said that he wore the shirt as a tribute to former 49ers linebacker Gary Plummer doing the same thing and that he’d “100 percent” do it again despite the likelihood of a fine.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the league has indeed fined Kittle. The NFL fine schedule calls for a penalty of $10,927 for displaying “personal messages” on the field, but Fowler reports that he’s been fined a higher amount. Per the report, it’s a fine of $13,659 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the 104-year history of the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles have never lost to the New York Jets.
Ahead of Sunday's showdown at MetLife Stadium, Philly sits 12-0 all-time against Gang Green. It's the best win-loss record by one team over another all-time, per NFL Research.

The rule, which was intended to reduce the number of returned kickoffs and therefore the number of injuries on high-speed collisions, has also resulted in a different strategy when the defense commits a penalty on a touchdown play that the offense can choose to apply either to the kickoff or the conversion.
In the past, teams often chose to apply the penalty on the ensuing kickoff, and then kick the ball high and short of the goal line, in the hopes of pinning the kickoff returner deep in his own territory. But with the new rule, a kickoff returner in that situation would just signal for a fair catch and take the ball at the 25.

It was, indeed a boneheaded mistake. And it was emblematic of a Broncos season that has been full of mistakes. Payton was brought in with high expectations that he’d have the Broncos competing in the AFC West. Instead, with the Broncos at 1-5 and the Chiefs at 5-1, Kansas City remains the class of the division, and Denver is more likely to compete for the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
