Damien Harris announces his retirement from the NFL

Running back Damien Harris announced his retirement Monday.

“For the past 20 years, playing the game of football has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” Harris wrote on social media. “Getting to represent the name on the back of my jersey on and off the field, getting to compete at the highest level with and against the best competitors while winning championships and being coached by the two greatest head coaches of all time in Nick Saban and Bill Belichick are all just a small part of what God has done in my life with the game of football.

“The people I’ve met, the places I’ve been and will go on to go, the experiences and memories I’ve made, the impact I’ve been able to make to this point, these are the things that mean the most to me. Gratitude is defined as ‘the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.’ Today I am grateful I have found strength to walk away from the game I love so much.”

Report- Panthers have reached out to Stephon Gilmore

According to Joe Person of TheAthletic.com, the Panthers have reached out to Gilmore about returning to the club.

Gilmore, 33, played for Carolina in the back half of the 2021 season. The Patriots traded Gilmore to the Panthers for a sixth-round pick. He appeared in nine games with eight starts for the club, recording 16 total tackles with two interceptions.

Gilmore then signed a two-year deal with the Colts and started 16 games for Indianapolis in 2022. He was traded to Dallas in 2023 and started all 17 games for the Cowboys, playing 94 percent of the team’s defensive snaps.

NFL announces it will play two Christmas Day games - NBC Sports

The NFL announced it will play two Christmas Day games in 2024, despite the holiday falling on a Wednesday.

The four teams will play on the Saturday of Week 16, giving them four days rest between games. They likely both will be afternoon games, rather than primetime, based on TV ratings from last year.

“Last year, the two highest-rated games on Christmas, the 1 o’clock [ET] game was the highest and then the 4:30 [ET], and then the lowest was really a big matchup going into it with Baltimore and San Francisco, and it was the lowest but it was still really strong with 27 and change million,” Hans Schroeder, the league’s executive vice president for media distribution, said Tuesday. “But even slight media points like that are helpful.”

49ers sign Lions restricted free agent Brock Wright to offer sheet - NBC Sports

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the 49ers have signed Lions tight end Brock Wright to an offer sheet.
Terms of the offer aren’t yet known. The Lions have five days to match. If they don’t, they get no compensation from the 49ers.
Wright was undrafted in 2021. By making him a one-year, $2.985 million tender offer, the Lions secured the right to match any offer sheet Wright signs. If the Lions match, Wright will be under contract for the terms offered.
Wright appeared in 14 regular-season games last season, with four starts. He caught 13 passes on 14 targets, for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Rams to re-sign Tyler Johnson - NBC Sports

The Rams will have wide receiver Tyler Johnson back for the 2024 season.
Johnson’s agents announced that their client has agreed to re-sign with the Rams this weekend. No terms of the deal were announced.
Johnson was a 2020 fifth-round pick by the Buccaneers and helped the team win a Super Bowl during his rookie season. He had 48 catches for 529 yards and two touchdowns in 31 regular season games with Tampa and seven catches for 76 yards in six playoff appearances.

Commanders sign QB Jeff Driskel

Washington announced on Monday that the team has signed veteran Jeff Driskel.

A sixth-round pick in 2016, Driskel has appeared in 24 games with 12 starts for the Bengals, Lions, Broncos, Texans, and Browns. In 2023, he started Cleveland’s Week 18 matchup against Cincinnati, as the Browns had already clinched the AFC’s No. 5 seed. He completed 13-of-26 passes for 166 yards with two touchdowns and two picks.

Wentz will backup Patrick Mahomes, with Chris Oladokun and Ian Book the other quarterbacks on the roster.Wentz, 31, spent last season with the Rams and played two games with one start. He completed 70.8 percent of his passes for 163 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in 2023.

The Chiefs will be his fifth team in five years.

The Eagles made Wentz the second overall pick in 2016, and he spent five seasons with the team. He then went to the Colts and Commanders before landing in Los Angeles last season.

Mahomes has missed only four starts since he became the full-time starter in 2018.

Hopefully Wentz can step in and finish a game out for the Chiefs if Mahomes gets hurt. Andy Reid goes with another serviceable veteran. Wentz more reliable/predictable than Mitch Trubisky, correct? Another example of the Bills being the Bills and the Chiefs being the Chiefs... and it's these type of decisions that are why the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl and the Bills don't.

Taylor Heinicke agreed to pay cut with Falcons

Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports that Heinicke agreed to a pay cut for the 2024 season. He was set to make a base salary of $5 million, but that has been slashed to $1.21 million.
Heinicke also received a $1.32 million bonus after the start of the new league year and had $40,000 in per-game roster bonuses taken out of the pact. The result was more than $4 million in cap savings for the Falcons.
