The Dolphins announced Howard’s release shortly after the 2024 league year began at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The move was expected, but the Dolphins waited to make it in order to make Howard a post-June 1 cut and clear $18.5 million in cap space come that date.

Bears sign backup quarterback Brett Rypien - NBC Sports

The Bears have announced that they are signing quarterback Brett Rypien. With Chicago widely expected to trade Justin Fields and take Williams with the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, it’s likely that the quarterback depth chart will consist of Williams as the starter, with Rypien and Tyson Bagent competing for the No. 2 job.
Rypien has started four games in his NFL career (three with the Broncos and one with the Rams) and hasn’t played particularly well, but he’ll have a good shot at earning a roster spot in Chicago.

49ers make release of Arik Armstead official - NBC Sports

Just after the start of the new league year, San Francisco announced that defensive tackle Arik Armstead had been released.

This was the expected move after Armstead reportedly declined to take a “significant” pay cut for 2024. It was the last season of Armstead’s contract.

San Francisco is expected to give Armstead a post-June 1 designation with his release, allowing the team to spread out the cap hit. San Francisco will save $18 million against the cap.

Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, Rudolph has agreed to a one-year deal with the Titans worth up to $3.62 million.
Rudolph, 28, had been with the Steelers since the club selected him in the third round of the 2018 draft. He took over as the team’s starter late in the 2023 season after Kenny Pickett had suffered an ankle injury and Mitch Trubisky proved ineffective.

Harrison Smith agrees to remain with Vikings on reworked contract - NBC Sports

Another year, another reworked contract for Vikings safety Harrison Smith.
Smith took a pay cut around this time last year to end questions about whether he would remain with the team or not. Those questions trailed him into this offseason as well, but multiple reports say that he has agreed to revise his deal again.

NFL teams make two proposals to move the trade deadline later in the season - NBC Sports

It isn’t the only one for NFL teams to consider. The Steelers have proposed moving the deadline for making trades back a week until after Week Nine games have been completed while the Browns, Lions, Eagles, Jets, 49ers, and Commanders have proposed a two-week shift to after Week 10.
The Steelers said the reason for their proposal was to move the deadline to the midpoint of the 18-week regular season while the multi-team proposal noted the alignment in timing with other professional sports leagues and said the change “provides the league with a better opportunity to put its best product on the field for the stretch run of the regular season and into the postseason.”

Eric Kendricks now plans to sign with Cowboys, not 49ers - NBC Sports

Veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks, who had agreed to terms with the 49ers, has now agreed to sign with the Cowboys instead.
The move reunites Kendricks with Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who was the head coach in Minnesota for seven seasons while Kendricks played there. After Zimmer was fired by the Vikings, Kendricks said Zimmer had a “fear based” coaching style that Kendricks was glad to get away from, but apparently Kendricks now thinks Zimmer is a coach he wants to play for again.

Lions propose giving coaches a third challenge if either of the first two are successful - NBC Sports

NFL coaches get two replay challenges in every game. If they hit on both, they get a third.
The Lions would like to change that.
Detroit has proposed a revision to the rules that would allow a coach to get a third challenge if the coach is right one either, not both, of the first two challenges.
The proposal wouldn’t change the situations in which a coach may initiate a challenge. Currently, the possibility of replay review falls beyond the purview of the coaches on a scoring play, a turnover, a failed fourth-down conversion, the final two minutes of either half, or overtime.

NFL will consider proposal to show tenths of seconds on stadium scoreboard clocks - NBC Sports

For the second consecutive offseason, the Eagles have asked the other NFL teams to consider a proposal to show tenths of seconds on game clocks.
Philadelphia proposed new language in the NFL’s timing rules that says, stadium clocks “will count down in one second increments except in the last 60 seconds of the 2nd and 4th quarter, when the clocks will transition to a countdown in tenths of seconds.”
Using tenths of a second is already done in basketball and some other sports, for those last-minute situations when the difference between 2.9 seconds remaining and 2.0 seconds remaining might be significant. The Eagles want to bring it to the NFL as well.

It didn’t work out this time.
Flacco has agreed to a one-year deal with the Colts, PFT confirmed, with $4.5 million guaranteed and $4.2 million more available in incentives.

The Cardinals agreed to terms with free agent offensive tackle Jonah Williams on Wednesday.
He will replace D.J. Humphries, who the Cardinals officially released after nine seasons.
