Sunday Night Football schedule kicks off with Rams visiting Lions - NBC Sports

Last season’s Wild Card game between the Rams and the Lions was a thriller and the two teams will square off again on the first Sunday night of the NFL season.
The Lions won that game 24-23 to begin a trip that ended in the NFC Championship Game and the matchup on Sunday Night Football will be an early gauge of two teams with aspirations of postseason success.
Both teams will make other appearances on Sunday night. The Lions will visit the Texans in Week 10 while the Rams will be at home against the Eagles in Week 12. The Texans and Eagles are also scheduled for multiple appearances and those four teams are joined by the Chiefs, Bills, Cowboys, Jets, and 49ers. The Cowboys are scheduled for three Sunday night games.

Giants unveil alternate uniforms to commemorate 100th anniversary

The Giants will be celebrating their 100th anniversary this season and an alternate uniform will be part of that effort.

The team unveiled that look on Thursday and it’s a big departure from what we’ve grown accustomed to teams wearing in the modern era. The “Century Red” look features red jerseys with a blue midsection underneath white numbers. There is also a special 100th season patch on the upper left.

It is a replica of the jerseys that the Giants wore in 1933, when they advanced to the first NFL Championship Game. They will also wear tan pants with red and blue striped pants that are a throwback to the team’s 1925 uniforms.

The Giants will also be wearing alternate helmets that resemble the winged helmets made famous by Michigan, but in red and blue rather than maize and blue. The team wore a similar look with leather helmets during the 1938 season.

CBS, Fox will both have doubleheaders in Week 15 - NBC Sports

Most weeks see only one of the networks holding a doubleheader with late games starting at 4:25 p.m. ET and one of them being broadcast across most of the country. In recent years, the exceptions have been in Week One and Week 18, but the 2024 schedule has the two networks hosting dueling doubleheaders in Weeks 15 and 18 instead.

“Is it better to do it later in the season when you have a better sense of where all the teams are and how to get the right teams into those windows?” executive vice president of NFL Media Hans Schroeder said, via Joe Reedy of the Associated Press. “We continue to tweak and evolve. If teams play their way on, we have a chance to look at that we wouldn’t have in Week One.”

In Week 15 this season, CBS will carry Patriots at Cardinals, Colts at Broncos and Bills at Lions at 4:25 p.m. ET. Fox will have Buccaneers at Chargers and Steelers at Eagles.

Hall of Fame Game to air on ESPN and ABC - NBC Sports

This year’s Hall of Fame Game will air on ESPN and ABC, the league announced today.
The annual kickoff to the preseason features the Bears and Texans this year, in recognition of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024 featuring former Bears Devin Hester, Steve McMichael and Julius Peppers, plus former Texan Andre Johnson.
The Monday Night Football broadcasting team of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will call the game. It will be the first time ESPN has broadcast the Hall of Fame Game, but the game aired on ABC from 1971 to 2005.

NFL gave Jets six early prime-time games because they "kind of owe us one" - NBC Sports

“Yes, it’s an awful lot of prime-time games early in the season, but, obviously, I feel like Jets kind of owe us one,” North said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. (Thanks, Rich, for typing it up. I was putting off working back through the recording of the one-hour call to find the right spot.)

“When we had this conversation a year ago, we were -- all of us -- all-in on the Jets, and for that guy to last four plays was disheartening for many of us,” North added. “I feel like we could run it back, and certainly our broadcast partners, when they came to us early in the process talking about what storylines they want to focus on early in the season, obviously Aaron Rodgers’s return was a key one for everybody. . . . Hopefully, he stays healthy and, hopefully, they’re relevant.”

Cameron Heyward is entering his 14th season, and for the first time, he is not participating in the Steelers’ voluntary offseason program. The defensive tackle confirmed on his Not Just Football podcast that he is sitting out as he seeks a contract extension.

“Have always attended these, but at this time it’s just contract negotiations, and I want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler, but we’ll see what happens,” Heyward said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “I’m training hard. It’s nothing I’m not doing on and off the field. I’m doing everything possible, and we’ll get there when we get there.”

The NFL’s daily transaction report brings word that they signed third-round defensive back Kamren Kinchens and fifth-round defensive end Brennan Jackson on Thursday. First-round defensive end Jared Verse is the only one of their 10 picks who has not signed their rookie deals.

Kinchens played in 33 games for Miami over the last three years. He had 162 tackles, 11 interceptions, two interception returns for touchdowns, five tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in those appearances.

Bears sign fifth-round DE Austin Booker

The Bears acquired the No. 144 pick they spent on Booker from the Bills in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round selection.

Booker played at Kansas, appearing in 12 games last season. He played six games at the University of Minnesota in 2022.

He played sparingly for the Golden Gophers but totaled 56 tackles, eight sacks and 12 tackles for loss for the Jayhawks in 2023 and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors.

Booker is the third of the Bears’ five draft picks to sign. Third-round offensive tackle Kiran Amegadjie and fourth-round punter Tory Taylor previously signed their four-year contracts.

Aaron Rodgers "thought about" joining the Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ticket - NBC Sports

Rodgers confirmed that he “thought about” accepting the assignment.

“I definitely thought about it because I love Bobby, and I just wanted to hear what he had to say about it,” Rodgers said.

Kennedy reportedly shied away from Rodgers because donors weren’t happy with the idea. Nor should they be.

Unlike certain politicians who currently have somewhere to be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, Rodgers does not have a sizable group of passionate followers. At this point, the prevailing attitudes toward Rodgers aren’t “love” or “hate” but “no opinion” or “hate.”

Still, if Rodgers had done it, he would have had to decide whether to stop playing until the campaign ended or to try to do both. It would have been very hard for him to do both, especially since he emphasized in his final press conference of the 2023 season that, moving forward, everyone with the team should avoid doing anything that distracts from the goal of winning football games.
