Colts pick up Kwity Paye’s fifth-year option

The Colts announced they have exercised the option, which means Paye has a guaranteed salary of $13.387 million for the 2025 season.

Paye arrived in Indianapolis out of Michigan with the 21st pick in the 2021 NFL draft He has developed into a solid player, and last year he recorded 8.5 sacks and played 60 percent of the Colts’ defensive snaps.

This year Paye has a very affordable cap hit of $4.3 million. Next year he’ll be a lot more expensive, but the Colts think he’s worth it.

Report- No criminal charges against Dak Prescott over 2017 sexual assault allegation - NBC Sports

WFAA.com reports that prosecutors will not pursue the matter, and that Dallas police “found no evidence to support” the alleged victim’s claims.

“Corroborate” would be the better term, since the alleged victim’s version obviously counts as evidence. The question is whether prosecutors believe they can prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If the only evidence is her claim and Dak’s denial with nothing more, it becomes difficult to meet the very high standard for a criminal conviction.

The decision not to pursue criminal charges has no impact on the civil claims that are pending between the parties. Prescott sued first, accusing the alleged victim and her lawyers of extortion, among other things, after the alleged victim’s lawyers sent a demand letter seeking payment of $100 million.

Chargers add WR DJ Chark - NBC Sports

The second-round pick in 2018, who spent four years with the Jaguars, has his third team in three seasons. Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, he has agreed to terms with the Chargers.
It’s a one-year deal, worth “up to” $5 million. Which means, as we’ve learned especially this year, that the only way to get there is to hit some incentives that, at times, can be hard to achieve.
In 2022, Chark played for the Lions. Last year, the Panthers.
He was a Pro Bowler in 2019, his second season. It was his only 1,000-yard campaign, at 1,008. Last year, he had 525 yards in 15 games with the Panthers.

NFL Network apparently pulls plug on Total Access - NBC Sports

First came the bizarre decision to take a popular morning show off the air for months (at a minimum) and relocate it from one coast to the other. Now comes a round of post-draft layoffs that apparently will end Total Access, the nightly studio show devoted to all things NFL.

Ben Axelrod of AwfulAnnouncing.com reports that “the majority of the show’s staff” was laid off on Friday.

The show remains on NFLN’s online schedule.

Michael Irvin is out at NFL Network - NBC Sports

Irvin is out, as reported by Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post.

The league confirmed the news to Andrew Marchand of TheAthletic.com.

It’s no surprise, given the events of 2023. Irvin was sent home from the Super Bowl after an employee of a Marriott hotel complained about Irvin. He sued the hotel but not the league. The league, as we understood it at the time, wanted the case to go away before bringing Irvin back.

Chiefs sign 17 undrafted rookies, cut three players

The Chiefs cut a handful of players on Friday and they dropped three more on Saturday while adding 17 undrafted rookies to their roster.
Wide receiver Jacob Copeland, tight end Izaiah Gathings, and safety Tyree Gillespie were all waived off of the 90-man roster. Defensive end Jordan Smith, wide receiver Shi Smith, and wide receiver Anthony Miller were dropped on Friday and the Chiefs also withdrew their exclusive rights free agent tender offer to linebacker Cole Christiansen.
Former TCU running back Emani Bailey is one of the 17 undrafted free agents who joined the team. Bailey ran 223 times for 1,209 yards and eight touchdowns last season and also posted 25 catches for 184 yards.

J.J. Watt- I told DeMeco Ryans I'll play if the Texans need me - NBC Sports

J.J. Watt says he’s ready, willing and able to play for the Texans this season, if head coach DeMeco Ryans needs him.

Watt said at his charity softball game on Saturday that he let Ryans know he’ll play for the Texans if they think he’d make the difference for him.

“I’ve had 12 great years in this league and I’m very thankful to have walked away healthy and playing great,” Watt said. “I told DeMeco last year, I said, ‘Don’t call unless you absolutely need it, but if you ever do call, I’ll be there.’ And he knows not to call unless he absolutely needs it. This is the last year I’ll tell him that, because I’m not going to keep training the way I’ve been training, but he knows that if he ever truly does need it, I’ll be there for him. I don’t anticipate that happening — they’ve got a very good group.”

Patriots see Caedan Wallace moving from Penn State right tackle to NFL left tackle - NBC Sports

Incumbent right tackle Mike Onwenwu will stay on that side, while Wallace — who played all but six of his college snaps at right tackle — is expected to move to left tackle, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Wallace said he is “super confident” in his ability to move to left tackle, and Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf said Wallace is “athletic enough to make the switch,” and a “really good pass-protector.”

In the first round, the Patriots drafted the player they hope will be their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye. They also hope that Wallace, their third-round pick, will be protecting Maye’s blind side for years to come.

ESPN Bet is off to a bad start - NBC Sports

How is ESPN Bet doing so far? To quote the Bubble Boy, “Not too good.”

Before going any farther with this, here’s a disclaimer. NBC has a gambling deal with DraftKings; PFT the online operation has had no gambling deal, ever.

We’ve had opportunities. We’ve passed, for various reasons. Among other things, I’ve got lingering concerns that too many people will view sports betting as a way to make money and not what it truly is — a form of entertainment that entails, for the vast majority of those who do it, a high degree of certainty that you will lose money.

Jordan Love’s current deal gave him a chance to turn around rocky start to 2023

It’s now a given that Jordan Love is the guy in Green Bay. That he truly can become the third straight franchise quarterback for the Packers, dating back to Brett Favre. And that raises the very real question of whether he should have held firm a year ago, forcing the Packers to either pick up his fifth-year option or let him enter a contract year.
There’s another side to this. If Love hadn’t done a deal that gave him a two-year commitment from the Packers, they wouldn’t have picked up his fifth-year option (per source). Also, the Packers were 2-5 after seven games.
