26 Iowa athletes sue over geolocation tracking of wagers
In Iowa, 26 athletes have sued over geolocation tracking that allegedly violated their constitutional rights during an investigation into sports betting.
Via ESPN.com, a 47-page lawsuit accuses investigators of using third-party software to track them without a search warrant.
Sixteen of the plaintiffs were charged with crimes. Twelve of them pleaded guilty to underage gambling. Four who were charged with felony identity theft had their cases dismissed in March, after prosecutors conceded that the state had exceeded its authority.
The other 10 plaintiffs lost playing time due to NCAA and/or NFL sanctions.
The case shows that there is a balance to be struck when it comes to preventing illegal gambling and protecting the basic privacy rights of all citizens.
Jerod Mayo on Patriots’ quarterback position- “We have a very strong room”
Coach Jerod Mayo was asked by reporters whether he envisions keeping five on the roster for the offseason program, or whether someone could be moved.
“Well, that’s yet to be seen,” Mayo said, via the transcript distributed by the team. “At this current time, we’re still on the phone right now with potential free agents coming up here soon. We’ll see how all the dominos kind of play out, but at the same time, you want to have a strong group. You want to have a strong room. I would say the way it looks now, we have a very strong room.”
Jets will exercise 2025 option on Alijah Vera-Tucker’s contract
General Manager Joe Douglas announced at a post-draft press conference that the team would exercise their option on Alijah Vera-Tucker’s contract for next year. Vera-Tucker was the 14th overall pick in 2021.
The option will be fully guaranteed and Vera-Tucker will be in line to make a little more than $15.3 million next year.
Jets end 2024 draft by selecting DB Jaylen Key at No. 257
This year, “Mr. Irrelevant” is safety Jaylen Key out of Alabama, taken at No. 257.
Key, 24, spent most of his career at UAB before transferring to Alabama in 2023. He started 12 games for the Crimson Tide in 2023, registering 60 total tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. He also had a pair of passes defensed and an interception.
Key earned honorable mention All-Conference USA distinction in 2022 when he recorded three interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles, and a sack in 13 games for UAB.
