Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane was asked Thursday how many players on the team’s draft board have a first-round grade.

“More than last year, but not 28,” Beane said.

Such is the reality of winning enough games to pick late in the first round of the NFL draft. The Bills own the 28th pick. It’s common for NFL teams to have no more than 18 to 24 players with first-round grades in any given year.

Obviously, every team grades differently, based on their schemes and needs. There could be a player with a Bills first-round grade on the board at No. 28. But maybe not.

In his final briefing with the media before next Thursday’s draft, Beane faced a barrage of questions on the possibility of trading up or down.

“You know, I’ll take any call,” he said with a laugh. “You know me. Next week the phones start ringing all over the place. Teams that want to bail out. ... I don’t know if teams in the top 10 are calling us, I wouldn’t expect that. Teams in the teens will start calling because maybe they got their eye on a couple guys and if they don’t get those, they would as soon add something maybe, depending on what’s on the board. We’ll assess them all, have conversations, see who’s on the board when their picks come up. And we’ll be doing the same. We’ll also be looking the other way.”

For any other GM it means trade up OR down. But with Beanie Baby we know he only trades in one direction.

A couple 2nd/3rd round picks might do this roster better than one teens pick and then nothing till Day 3, IMO.

Some of the greatest players in team history have come in the second, third and fourth rounds.

That's how you build a team.

I love the off season and I look forward to the draft, I get so excited like a kid at Christmas. BUT, every year, under Bean I’m the kid that has this little voice in the back of my mind that says you’re going to be disappointed because he’s going to chase the rabbit down that hole. You wanted roller skates, a baseball glove, a BB gun, a football, and/or a skateboard. You wake up Christmas all excited and you get underwear, socks and a new coat and the coat didn’t fit, lol!

I love the off season and I look forward to the draft, I get so excited like a kid at Christmas. BUT, every year, under Bean I’m the kid that has this little voice in the back of my mind that says you’re going to be disappointed because he’s going to chase the rabbit down that hole.
