Brandon Beane: Didn’t matter to us who they were picking

Brandon Beane on trade with Chiefs- Didn't matter to us who they were picking - NBC Sports

Bills fans hoping to see their team take a wide receiver at No. 28 on Thursday night might have been disappointed when they heard the team would be trading the pick and, judging from the social media reaction, they were more than disappointed by the trading partner.

The Chiefs, who have eliminated the Bills from the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, moved up from No. 32 and took speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy to address one of their biggest needs. The upset from fans came from the playoff history, the Bills’ own need at the spot and perhaps because they remember that another draft-day trade with the Chiefs led to Patrick Mahomes’ arrival in Kansas City.

Re: Brandon Beane: Didn’t matter to us who they were picking

Buffalo picked up a third-round pick on Friday in the Chiefs deal and the Bills then traded out of the first round altogether while adding a fifth-rounder from the Panthers, which Bills General Manager Brandon Beane said was more significant to the team than anything the Chiefs were planning at No. 28.

“I could see them taking a receiver but you don’t truly know. . . . But where they were moving from, I don’t think it mattered to us who they were picking,” Beane said, via Matt Parrino of NewYorkUpstate.com. “Now we’ve got the two 2s, a 3, a 4 and four 5s. I think that gives us a chance to fill some roles or use ammo to move around again, depending on how the board falls.”

The Bills have the first pick of the second round, which gives them plenty of targets to choose from and also offers the possibility of another trade with a team that spent Thursday night talking themselves into the need to move up for their chosen player.

Just spitballing here....but could it possibly be that Pegula intervened?

Think about it for a second.

The cost overruns on the new stadium are beginning to pile up quickly.

The Pegulas are now paying yet another Coach not to coach their hockey team.

They gotta fund their daughter's tennis career.

They're so cash-strapped, that they're considering selling part of the Bills for chrisakes.

Is it possible that Terry pulled Beane aside and simply said to him....

"Listen, don't move up in the first round. If the guy you like is there at 28, take him. If not, consider moving back into the second round, as the salary and the signing bonus for a second rounder will be much less for a guy drafted in the second, as opposed to the first."

What makes me wonder, is Beane's bland, generic, response to why he didn't pick last night: "We're just following our board."

    Really?

    I'm proud of him today.

Thought he tipped him hand pre draft by devaluing the first round talent. I mean, if he wanted to trade back, shouldn't he have built up the value of his pick?

But it didn't matter, and then he found a partner and traded back again. Now he has assets to trade up for the player(s) he wants in rounds that are much less costly to do so.

    Well played.

If money was the issue there’s no way Pegs lets Bean get rid of Diggs and all that dead cap, no matter how bad he was destroying the locker room.

I figured it was a strategy based on our cap situation, but I believe that the team's ownership is much more precarious than most fans want to admit.

The difference isn't very much from 28-33 in salary:

    • No. 28: $13.54 million (Spotrac) | $13.79 million (Over The Cap)
    • No. 33: $9.92 million (Spotrac) | $10.07 million (Over The Cap)

If 3M is going to sink Pegula, the whole team will be up for sale soon.

Ok, why do you believe the team's ownership is so precarious?

Teams don't get sold very often because of affordability issues.

    In my opinion...NO CHANCE!!!!

Pegula may be a greedy billionaire, but he has shown that he leaves the football decisions to the guys he trusts....Beane and McD.

Besides the fact that the difference in pay between 1st and 2nd round is minimal.

    According to Forbes, in 2023...

The top five picks in the draft can expect to make over $30 million in their rookie deals, according to Spotrac, with an estimated $36.8 million for the second overall pick and over $32.3 million for the fifth overall selection.

The next six picks in the draft (No. 6 through No. 11) are estimated to rake in over $20 million each in their rookie contracts, while lower picks in the first round are expected to land deals north of $12 million.

Second-round picks will make slightly less, according to Spotrac, which estimates the first pick of the second round will pull in just under $10 million in their rookie deal, while the last selection of that round is estimated to land a deal around $6.3 million.

The top tier were gone .... so we knew it would be a WR but didn't care enough to make the pick ourselves adding the 3rd was smart and the 2nd trade down was maybe better .... Trust Beane he's calling the shots.
I bet he's sitting on at least 3 really nice offers for the 33rd pick right now .... maybe more.

Spitballing is fun. But like your hypothesis usually leads to the wrong conclusion.

Remember Pegula is a Billionaire, the savings we’re talking about would be the equivalent of loose change in his big pockets that he’d give to the homeless guy washing his Rolls’ windshield at the bridge intersection.

to unlock a horde of cash?

He has a tremendous net worth but a lot of that is in assets, this sale would provide him a big dose of liquidity.

What he does with that liquidity, who knows?

It’s definitely not because he can’t afford groceries due to inflation. He’s certain to have a big picture plan.
