McDermott wants DC Bobby Babich to get a playcalling opportunity

From the time Bobby Babich became the Bills’ new defensive coordinator in February, it’s been unclear to what extent he’ll run the show on defense, or whether head coach Sean McDermott will continue to call the defensive plays. McDermott is vowing to give Babich that opportunity, but whether he gets the job in the regular season is a different question.

“There’s going to be intentionality on my part to make sure, whether it’s practice or preseason games, that Bobby’s given that opportunity,” McDermott said, via TheAthletic.com. “So it’s just a matter of when and for how long. Being a former play caller myself, six years before I got here and then last year again, you’re always having to knock off some of the rust.

I didn’t take it like you did. I took it as it’s his call and he wants to see if Babich is ready because he’d gladly give up the responsibility if he’s able.

McDermott and Beane will always hold a special place in team history as they not only pulled a perennial loser out of the abyss, they turned them into a top 3-5 team that no one wants on their schedule. McD has made some questionable calls over his HC career but he’s learning as well.

Everyone wants that lightning-in-the-bottle coach that has major success in the first couple of years but I’d rather have sustained success which could lead to a consistent winner, with the right QB. Josh can be that guy, and will be that guy. It takes a bit of luck as well for that one (1) team that wins the SB every year.
