    Pats sign Stokes

For months, Bill Belichick has had concerns about the durability and depth of his receiving corps.

Yesterday, he did something about it, signing receiver J.J. Stokes off the NFL scrap heap.

Stokes, 31, entered the league as a high-profile first-round draft pick (10th overall) of San Francisco in 1995, but never lived up to expectations in eight seasons with the 49ers. Stokes landed in Jacksonville this season but was released Nov. 12 after the Jaguars claimed receiver Kevin Johnson off waivers from Cleveland.

The Pats view Stokes as a stop-gap measure because their receivers have had trouble staying on the field. The Pats had a chance to go after Stokes when he was available last summer, but never made a move for him.
