Talking Rochester may get a Downtown Casino before Buffalo ever does....

Gov. George Pataki could announce any day a tentative deal to build a $500 million casino that would include a 400- to 500-room hotel at the Sibley Building and a gambling facility at Midtown Plaza with an attached performing arts center in downtown Rochester. Any deal with the governor would then need to be passed by the state Legislature and Congress.

The answer to prosperity does not always lie in a casino...only way the state can gauge more money from the taxpayers, imo.

Casinos are appealing, but they often end up being "negative tourism". We have the so-called "boats"in Indiana next to Cincinnati. In their 5th year of operation, they have taken close to 2 billion dollars out of the area. And the fact is most of that $$$ was extracted locally - not a lot of people have come to the area with their outside bucks. That's a lot of money that might have been otherwise spent at local bars, grocerey stores, clothing shops and so forth.

Although Rochester needs to attract tourists, studies show that in 4-5 yrs. time, bankruptcy goes up by 10% and only a 2% increase in employment on that City.

There will an influx of asians though.
