Gildon Ready for Any Role with Bills

The Buffalo Bills made it official on Wednesday, signing free agent linebacker, Jason Gildon. Gildon comes to Buffalo after 10 seasons in Pittsburgh in which he recorded 77 sacks, a Steelers record.

Gildon has Buffalo connections and is familiar with some of the faces around One Bills Drive having worked with them in Pittsburgh. Bills President and GM Tom Donahoe drafted Gildon back in the mid-1990s. Head coach Mike Mularkey was also on the coaching staff while Gildon was a Steeler.

While Gildon's role has yet to be determined, he said he is looking forward to competing for a starting job.

"I definitely feel like I'll be given the opportunity and all I'm after is the opportunity to compete," Gildon said in a news conference with the Buffalo media. "I definitely have something to offer."

Gildon was signed in an effort to bolster the Bills pass rush. The Bills defense finished second overall in the league last season, but often times had difficulty getting to the quarterback consistently. Gildon should give them an extra weapon.

I can't wait to see how both he and Posey are used, both are pretty good and if they can be utilized correctly, it could be scary with Spikes and Fletcher.....

I envision, Posey lining up at OLB and Gildon as DE on his side, on the snap, Posey zone blitzes and Gildon drops back to Posey's coverage spot....Now that would be nice, both know both positions very well......Damn, I can't wait, Jax is dead....

Hopefully both Kelsay and Deney get a wake up call. Competition should bring out the best out of one of them

i dont think we will see him at DE as much as you guys think.. kelsay and denny will get the most time there.

I think he will on 3rd downs and obvious passing situations or Posey will.

i think we have no idea at this point.. it really depends on denny or kelsay.. if they show in training camp that they have improved then your not going to take a starting DE off the field to put on an old LB in a new position he has never played.. or put a guy like posey there who is a failed DE.. you keep those guys at the position they are good at.. OLB.. and use the best one..

if gildon is actually lined up at a DE.. then it means that mr. donahoes last 2 second round picks really blow.. and he has done a crappy job picking DEs other than schobel who is about to be gone after this year.

so that is why i hope they dont need gildon there..

i didnt mean that to sound negative.. i am not.. this is a good signing.. i just think you keep the OLBs at OLB.. and let the best one or the freshest one out of the 2 go after the qb.. if we have to use them at DE.. then we are hurting really bad for a pass rush from the end spot.. and that is scare with the proposition of losing schobel.

I see your point but Posey an dGildon are pass rush specialist so I think having them on the field is a plus. I can see Gildon with his hand down and Posey Blitzing or vice versa. It gives a lot of options and looks.

What it gives Buffalo is the option to switch to the 3-4 when the sitation presents itself. i.e. 3rd and very long.

It also gives some veteran experience to the pass rushing group.

I'm still afraid that he's just Eddie Robinson all over again. The saving grace this time is that we've already got a starter in place. Gildon would have to beat him out.
Still searching for that offensive rhythm.

I don't think he's even close to Robinson, Robinson doesn't own his franchises all time sack record.
