Researchers have found that one gene--a kind of master sexual gene that normally exists in distinct male and female variants--can be manipulated to create polar-opposite patterns of sexual behavior in fruit flies.
In the scientific journal Cell, the researchers detail a series of experiments in which female fruit flies given the male variant of the gene acted exactly like males in courtship, madly pursuing other females, while males given the female version became more passive and turned their sexual attention to their own sex.
