    Tagliabue: Officiating must improve

NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Tuesday the officiating errors made at the end of the NFC wild-card game between the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers were “totally unacceptable.”

Welll duh!! Tags has been seeing the same problems for years yet the league's only response has been an instant replay system that, as good as it is, still doesn't solve all the problems.

The league blew there chance a couple years ago when they renegotiated the refs contracts. The sub refs were better than the real refs. I remember when the real refs came back the first week they got power hungry and called something like 17 penalties against the Bills including a bogus PI call on Buffalo away from the play and Buafflo interceted the pass. The next play Indy scored a TD. The league later said half of the penalties against Buffalo should not of been called.
NFL officials want to control a game more than they should. Nothing like getting paid thousands of dollars a week to do a crappy job...

          :madfire:

Officials are graded on their performances in every game -- obviously receiving lower grades if they make mistakes.

Those rated at the top at each position are given playoff assignments. Those who finish No. 1 are assigned to the Super Bowl. If they are rated low consistently, they are fired.

The NFL said those officials downgraded for mistakes in Sunday's game likely will start over with clean slates next year -- as does every official.

Bad week to be an NFL official

The first round of the NFL playoffs may have been the best we've seen in a long time. Too bad the league blew it. By admitting there was a mistake made at the end of the San Francisco 49ers-New York Giants game, the league turned an ugly situation into a really ugly situation. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said it was the worst incident involving officials in his 13 years on the job. OK, if it was so bad, then why didn't he or anybody else from the NFL order the teams back on the field? It happened to the Miami Dolphins a few years ago in Foxboro.
