DT Ian Scott to leave for NFL

Gators defensive tackle Ian Scott has told coach Ron Zook he's leaving for the NFL. Scott, a two-year starter, had 57 tackles and one sack this year.

2001 Season Stats: 11 games, 49 tackles, 10.5 total tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 5 passes broken up

Positives: Has good size and athletic ability for his size. Is a super-smart individual. Looked like a keeper during his sophomore season.

Negatives: Not much of a pass rusher and lacks pass rush upside. Has had knee problems in the past. Tends to play like too much of a nice guy. Would have really benefited from another year of college experience.

Overall analysis: After serving as a top backup in his true freshman season, Scott moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore. Scott has a great sophomore season and established himself as one of the better defensive tackles in the SEC. However, he went through a very tough junior year in which he suffered cartilage damage in his left knee and was far less than one-hundred percent for much of the season. Scott has good size and athletic ability for his size. He finds the ball, moves and pursues well, and can tie up the opposing offensive linemen. He is also a very intelligent individual. However, Scott doesn’t play with that nasty temperament that a scout would like to see. He also is a little on the short side and lacks great explosiveness, which means he probably won’t be much of a pass-rusher once he reaches the NFL. Scott also suffered from knee problems in both his freshman and junior seasons. Personally, I’m somewhat puzzled that this player decided to turn pro considering the very average performance he turned in as a junior.
