Late arrival to meeting costs Robbins start

Oakland Pro Bowl center Barret Robbins was late for the final team meeting Saturday night and will not start in Super Bowl XXXVII, according to Raiders' team sources.
It's uncertain how long Robbins, who will be replaced in the lineup by Adam Treu, will sit out the game. Earlier this month, Robbins was named to The Associated Press NFL All-Pro Team for the first time.

Actually, it didn't just cost him a start, it cost him the game. They sent him home so he wouldn't be a distraction.

Report: Raiders center out of Super Bowl

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Oakland Raiders All-Pro center Barret Robbins missed several team activities the day before the Super Bowl and will not play in Sunday's game, ESPN reported.

The network said Robbins did not return to the team until later Saturday evening, and that Raiders coach Bill Callahan told the team Robbins would be sent home. Backup Adam Treu will start in his place.

Robbins, a 6-foot-3, 320-pound player in his eighth season, was expected to help contain Tampa Bay's formidable defensive front, led by All-Pro tackle Warren Sapp. Robbins anchors a line that gave league MVP Rich Gannon enough time to throw for 4,689 yards and direct the NFL's most potent offense.

Robbins pays ultimate price after Saturday absence

SAN DIEGO -- Raiders All-Pro center Barret Robbins was sent home today and will not play in Super Bowl XXXVII after missing all of Oakland's team activities Saturday.
Robbins was not with the team for its walk-through Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium. The Raiders' first contact with Robbins on Saturday was at 8 p.m. PT, shortly before their 8:45 p.m. final team meeting. Robbins was told not to attend the meeting.

All coach Bill Callahan told the team during the Saturday night meeting was that Adam Treu would start at center against Tampa Bay and added to his players that "no one is bigger than the team."

Callahan gave no further details to his team.

Andrea Kremer reported on ABC that Robbins is still in San Diego and was taken to a local hosptial, according to an NFL source.
