Let's see if he signs. If he does at least they have a decent goalie. Still a bad team though
and we care because? (seriously, why?)
the sabres have the isles first rounder. if its tolled to next year (which it will be) it gives the sabres two likely lottery picks. so were paying attention to the isles roster

Have the Islanders said for sure their not giving up 5 ?
No way they give up their pick this year at this point.
I rather they have Halak then sign Hiller. Don't see that putting them in the playoffs.
The trade for Halak tells me for sure we're not getting the Islanders pick this year as they're clearly setting up to be a better than top 5 team next year. That said I wouldn't be shocked to see Halak not sign with the Islanders as have a feeling he wants to go to a playoff contender and or team close.
thats the idea. certainly. but, everyone said the islanders wouldnt be a lottery team THIS season. and here we are, the isles were terrible.
they need goaltending, and halak would certainly help. but its not nearly enough. even with halak, that team misses the playoffs, and is likely really REALLY bad again next year. besides, the sabres pick will almost certainly be another top 3 pick, so the sabres dont need to lean on the isles pick. its just gravy at this point.
halak probably needs to sign that offer sheet. his reputation took a beating at the trade deadline and with that story out of washington about how he didn't want to face his old team. true or not, if he angles to get out, i'm not sure he's getting a long term deal.too many questions about his work ethic and ability to be a true #1.
the isles only play to their fans is to try and put out a winner next year. living in NYC amongst a bunch of isle fans, they really hate snow. and they all are kind of prepared to see the worst possible outcome happen with the pick next year. but instead of being bitter about it, they want it to happen because they want snow out. and they know like we knew about reiger, it has to become so ridiculous to even have a chance to get rid of the dead weight known as your GM.
The isle's management on the other hand feels like if they can win this year and not hand the sabres a high pick, they save face. they know it's infinitely harder to ask for patience again and again and again.

Isles trade for Dan Boyle. 2015 second rounder. Boyle is marginal help on their back end. Buy the isles already have good offense and boyle isn't special defensively. He's also 38 and while his numbers are solid, they are declining. Regardless, its a piece of the puzzle for the isles. Still have a ton of holes to fill.
They still have to Agree to a Contract.
He's a UFA here in a few weeks.
They traded for Exclusive negotiating rights
Oh I didn't see that

And I got the pick wrong. My bad
I just don't see them being a playoff team.
boston
detroit
tampa
montreal
****sburgh
philly
columbus
rangers
Which one of these teams are poised to take a step back out of the playoffs? Oh... I know... none. maybe Boston has a down year. maybe detroit.
Aside from the sabres... I can see every other team in the east taking a step forward next year.
Detroit's gonna be down soon. But I've been saying that for years. Yet they keep squeaking in.
the boyle trade is odd. they are doubling down on their vanek insanity. instead of just taking their medicine, they are literally trying to just get a team ok enough that they won't give away the #1 pick next year. the only issue to that is that they are trading picks that will help keep the farm relatively stocked.
and if this still blows up in their face, they won't be relevant until 2025.
to me it just seems like they just want to save face on vanek and say, "we never thought we'd be at the bottom and see our 2015 season. it shows we were kind of in the middle.
