So here's the deal...
Murray has left this team an absolute mess...
The Sabres will be forced to trade EK9 in spite of him being the only one besides Jack and Poms that is producing. #1 EK9 probably doesn't want to be here. He's a party boy and Buffalo is NOT a destination. #2 We can't afford to take on another high cost long-term deal.
For as much as I like ROR, the game is RAPIDLY changing. It's all about speed and skill. ROR is NOT a speed player and is long-term at $8 mil per.
Okposo is 5 more years at $6 million. After he pots 10-15 goals this year, people are going lose patience fast. Another contract that is going to hurt for next 5 years.
Reinhart is a bust.
So outside of Poms and Eichel... this team has ZERO offense.
Riato is struggling to become a true #1 And had a multi year deal, and Lehner is complete garbage.
The Sabres aren't making the playoffs anytime in the next 3 years.
I'd rather see them move an unproductive big contract than one that is actually producing.
Kane can be a big fish in a small pond in Buffalo or lost in the ocean that is LA or NYC.
I get the reasoning in wanting to trade him. Get value while he is scoring. But I can't overcome my want to keep him, because he's about the only part of this puke team I like watching.
Gorges & Moulson? Really? It was a good idea 4 or 5 years ago.

The Sabres forwards are fine outside of Moulsons' idiotic contract. EK9 is likely gone after this year so trading him to a contender at the deadline will be the right play.
Defensively they're soft and Lehner is garbage. At least Gorges will be gone next year. Unfortunately there's no solid goalies set to become free agents this offseason.
So you're looking at a very similar team in 18/19 to this team with 2 main replacements and some spare parts.
The Sabres are just waiting until the Bills season is done or whenever they are eliminated from playoff contention, Sept. to Dec. is football season. The season really starts in January (usually after the AB)-April for the Sabres

Agree. It is ridiculous the amount of dead weight still on this team three years after the tank.

Pittsburg was worse and they came out of it just fine.
I remember things were so bad, in 05-06, Sebastian Caron allowed a full ice goal to the caps. No one on the pens came over and smacked his pads, or said anything to him. The commentators droned on and on a out how dysfunctional the team was, how horrible the culture was. That even Mario and leisure had checked out. Remember, that's a team where palffy and Mario walked away mid-season from. And of course, the pens were able to overcome that and build a winning culture.
New coach, new GM... Get rid of the dead weight, they'll be fine. Maybe not this year (still early) but hopefully they'll shake that soon.
Besides, whose even left from the tank years? Outside Pegula, not much.
And a rebuild isn't the problem, nor is a tank. Gotta strip down the old core for youth. The issue is they haven't gotten the right people to build them up. So far.

This is why I don't favor tanking.
It reinforces poor work habits in the very young guys you need to build your team around.
And why does Ristolainen never takes any heat on these boards?
He is one of the worst defensemen I have ever seen.
