I like Hinostroza, but he just doesn't score. He's at his NHL ceiling. The Sabres need to make room for others that can contribute more. I hope he finds a landing spot.

Portillo pisses me off. He's been hinting for two years that he wouldn't agree to come to Buffalo. Dump him ASAP.

Portillo hasn't. This is the first we've heard he is interested in testing the market

No it isn't. He has hinted at it since he was drafted. It's been a concern that reporters have been asking Adams about for two years.

As the trade deadline approaches and the Sabres are on the outside edge of a Wildcard spot, they are getting mentioned in a lot of rumors. Timo Meier might be the biggest move at the deadline. And, yes, the Sabres were mentioned as a good fit for the power forward in the Athletic.

Shayna Goldman of The Athletic: The chatter about Timo Meier going somewhere reached a fever pitch already. However, it seems to only be intensifying. While it becomes abundantly clear, he is being moved. One has to ask, how soon will that be?

He is far from the only target when it comes to San Jose. The Sharks have other players on the market too. However, where could Meier wind up? Fans and experts alike wax poetic about potential destinations. Several make sense and a couple make too much sense.

Meier consistently bring shot and chance metrics to the table at a high level. He creates havoc as a power forward. Teams like that. He possesses multiple runs because of his contract, but also a qualifying offer looms that could total $10 million.

San Jose expects to not contend for a good while and their cap situation dictates a likely move which could come sooner rather than later. Some teams in the mix include the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders. Among the three Tri-State teams, New Jersey has the most resources to make a deal work.

Seattle and Buffalo feature the assets to make a deal more palpable for the Sharks. Winnipeg is the one team that needs Meier like New Jersey does, but their cupboard could be a problem. It is safe to say the Sharks’ winger will be a crown jewel piece in this deadline.
Mike Grier has other players that are worth considering.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period: Now, the San Jose Sharks take phone calls on some of their depth players too. Scott Harrington, Matt Nieto, James Reimer, and Nick Bonino may all have different addresses before or on March 3rd.

Now, Bonino and Reimer carry arguably the most value here as far as trade deadline pieces. Both also have a five team no-trade list. Again, good rental pieces with low cap hits are hard to find.

Honestly, can you blame him? Things are looking up for the Sabres now but a) we've been the dregs of the league for a decade and b) things have been looking up at least 3x in the past decade and have never panned out.

As a fan, I'd love nothing more than to be a 20 y/o prospect in this organization. But if I'm being objective about it and I didn't have an emotional connection to it, it's one of the last organizations in the NHL that I'd want to be a part of.

I just saw this. The issue isnt Buffalo, it's that Portillo sees hockey as secondary and wants to go to school as long as possible. He's extremely pragmatic. It was never anything against Buffalo (though things may have changed since Levi is seen as the future) but for the longest time it was simply that school came first.

Isn't this the kind of thing that the Sabres should have known before drafting him?

I'm sure they did, and they probably thought it wouldn't be an issue.

But the reality is more and more college kids are exercising that loophole.

                      It should be closed

I don't blame Portillo for wanting to be in college. Nor do I blame him for getting to his UFA stage and deciding to test it.

But AFAIK, this is the first time Portillo has been a concern to test free agency

Cozens skated in the morning skate, but no line rushes. It's likely he's out tonight

Clague left practice. Was limping down the tunnel.

Not good. He's been solid for the Sabres

They audited this and only gave him 49 now.
