The defense only lost the biggest game in 25 years.
Last year when they would have won the Super Bowl.
We are talking about THIS year. Try and keep up.
The defense of 2021 was turned over a HUGE amount for 2022.
Before this season the Bills....
Released DT Star Lotulelei Released LB AJ Klein Released DT Vernon Butler Did not re-sign CB Levi Wallace Did not re-sign DT Harrison Phillips Did not re-sign DE Jerry Hughes Did not re-sign DE Mario Addison
Signed EDGE Von Miller Signed DT DaQuan Jones Singed DT Tim Sttle Signed DT Jordan Phillips Signed DE Shaq Lawson Drafted Kaiir Elam Drafted Christian Benford
BTW....several of the defensive payers the Bills added for 2022, were not on the field vs Cincy....
Von Miller - gone for season
DaQuan Jones - out for the game
Christian Benford - out for the season
Jordan Phillips - injured but played less than 100%
Besides the fact that Micah Hyde (one of the keys to the secondary....gone for the season)
Jordan Poyer, hampered by injuries most of the season, had a bad playoff season.
Damar Hamlin - starter at S in place of Hyde....gone for the season after dying on the field and miraculously brought back to life.
Despite all of those challenges the defense in 2022 still performed at a very high level. Especially ta the most critical one....pints allowed per game. #2 at only 17.9. (SanFran #1 at 16.3....like the Bills, it did not help them in their last game...but that does not diminish the excellence of the 49er’s defense).
So the D failed to win a game and failed to lose a game… fair enough.
I would say Von Miller executed the defensive call to rush inside the Rt tackle and Milano rushed outside setting up the winning interception that iced the KC game.
giving up nearly perfectly executed consecutive TDs isn’t a good performance.
so I contend they won 1 game and were dominant in a few blowouts but also gave up way too many 3rd and longs. Failed to pressure the QB and none of the D players outside of Von is a stud. Hype and Poyer were blue chippers as was Tre White…. Those 3 might have played their best football already.

They're a good regular season defense. Big whoop. It's easy to stack up nice stats against average and bad QB. Especially when you have an offense who gives you a lead and forces those poor QB's to throw.
Daquan Jones was a big loss for the playoff game. That's where coaches step up to minimize it. Oh, and again they stuck to their zone when Burrow is good against it, and they only rushed 4 where Burrow is good against it, and they lined up on 3rd and 4 deeper than the 1st down.
Offense choked, defense crumpled. Defense will always crumple, because they don't adapt. They don't adapt because their coaches can't. Teams reflect their coaches.
What games did they win because of the defense? Zero.
Upon further review, that statement is false.
The Bills defense won the games vs the two best teams they played in the regular season....KC & Baltimore.
Since I have detailed the FACT that when an offense scores 10 points or less, they lose almost every singe time.....conversely when defense HOLDS an opposing offense to 10 points of less, they win almost every single time.
The Bills defense held four teams to 10 points or less.....LA Rams, Tennessee (the team that too many posters said would run all over the Bills and there was no way they would beat them ), Pittsburgh and New England.
What is even more revealing is that the defense had a stellar goal line stance that virtually won the Minny game....until Josh Allen (read: the offense) literally HANDED the game to Minny by fumbling the ball for losing TD.
So, what games did the win because of the offense?.....
LA Rams
Tennessee
Pittsburgh
Kansas City
Minnesota (until Josh Allen handed them the win)
New England
How many games did the offense LOSE?.....every single one of the four losses this season.

It is not accurate to say "It's easy to stack up nice stats against average and bad QB.”.....as I pointed out above, the Bills DEFENSE won the two games against the best QB’s they faced in the regular season....Mahomes and Jackson.
They held Matt Stafford, SB champion QB, to 10 points. Aaron Rodgers was a non-factor against the Bills defense. The defense held him to only 10 points until the garbage time TD late in the game. GB gets the ball ball with about 2 minutes left in the game......a situation that Rodgers has shown time and time again that he owns....the Bills hold him to a missed FG.
Actually, for 2022, that (a good regular season stat stacking) was the case for the OFFENSE.
The OFFENSE was directly responsible for every loss this season. Against Cincy, as I have detailed as a FACT, when an offense scores 10 potions or less, in the playoffs or the Super Bowl, they LOSE.
For the playoffs, since Since 2000 (including 2022) there have been 46 teams that have scored 10 or less points (excluding Super Bowls). Their record??
0-46
The last time a team scored 10 or less points in a playoff game and won??
1997. PITT 7 – NE 6.
The Super Bowl is even MORE stark….in ALL 56 Super Bowls, one ream has scored 10 or less points SIXTEEN times. Their record????...If you are paying attention you guessed it…..
0-16.
Interestingly, the last team to score 10 or less points in a SB was not very long ago….2020 season, Tampa Bay 31 – Kansas City – 9. San Fran had unquestionably the best defense in the NFL this season, they were burned for 31 points in the NGCC. BUT, that is NOT why they lost that game....they lost because their offense was putrid and could only muster 7 measly points.
They had an excuse, they were on their third string QB, who was not only a rookie, but the last players drafted in 2022....and after he got knocked out early in the game, their FOURTH string QB, who has a long career of being not even close to even a below average starter.....had to come in the game, and then HE was injured and had to leave the game.
Jesus. They were contemplating using McCaffrey at QB. Purdy goes back in and admitted (later) that he could not throw the ball past the LOS.
The Bills offense had NO such excuse, for the Cncy game or the whole season.
The Bills defense was plagued by critical injury after critical injury....(do I really have to point them all out?????)....NO SUCH injury bug on the offensive side of the ball.
NONE of their best players missed the whole season, or had season ending injuries during the year. Josh Allen was in perfect health vs Cincy. Diggs....his usual iron-man self.
Yet, they put up their worst offensive showing of the season. PUTIRD is the only way to describe it.
It is more accurate today that the OFFENSE is a "good regular season offense” and **** THE BED in the playoffs. Worse yet, the OFFENSE **** THE BED for every regular season LOSS as well.

Dorsey is just as bad as "deer in the headlights" Frazier. Dorsey has no short passing game cued up. No strategic running game to fool defenses with different looks. Hardly any slant routes. Everything is long developing, outside, and low %, especially on 3rd and short. Too many empty backfields. There really isn't any offensive game plan, it's make Josh scramble and wait for someone to get open after 7 seconds. I'll give Frazier credit for keeping this d competitive but the lack of adjustments in the Cincy game is just mind glowingly bad on both sides of the ball.
