BillsZone Mini-Camp Report 5/1/2004

by Michael J. Thomas

It might have only been May 1, but it sure felt like football season was upon us. The players came out of the tunnel to rounds of applause and of course the “Drew” chants were heard too. The Bills had two practices yesterday. One of them was open to public from 2:30-4:30pm and the other one was closed. The Bills worked on a bunch of light contact drills, including a bunch of 1-on-1 and some 7-on-7 and they even worked in a few 11-on-11 drills. After practice was over, all the players went to the stands and signed autographed for about 15-20 minutes.

Here’s a few things that I noticed from mini-camp…

1. Drew Bledsoe looks good out there. He was on target with his throws and didn’t have many problems, except for the time when the receiver ran the wrong route and Lawyer Milloy got himself his first interception of the off season.

2. Travis Henry was the crowd favorite and was really pumped up as he entered the stadium. He showed a lot of burst and even took a couple hits out on the field. He is definitely not going to give his up without a fight.

3. JP Losman looks like he is going to be a pretty special quarterback. He has some nice zip on his ball, along with a tight spiral. He is pretty accurate too. Losman definitely gets the ball out quicker than any other quarterback on the Bills roster. Plus, he also has the scrambling ability. There was one play, when the pocket broke down and he stood back there moving around, trying to finish the play. On another play, they ran him with the quarterback keeper and he gained about 10 yards or so.

4. The diamond in the rough has got to be TE Jason Peters. The guy is 6’4 and 330 pounds and he can run and catch. He is definitely going to be a fan favorite pretty quickly. The Bills lined him up to block for Travis in a 2 TE set a couple times and then had him catch a screen pass. The best play had to be when he caught a quick slant from JP Losman. He took the ball and ran it 50 yards for the touchdown. The crowd went nuts!

5. Eric Moulds started out slow, he dropped a couple passes and then he embarrassed the heck out of Nate Clements. There was one play where Clements was all over Moulds and he still caught the ball and ran downfield. It definitely looks like he is 100% healed from the groin injury and had no problem with his speed and cutting ability.

6. Josh Reed was lined up in the at times, but also as the #2 receiver. He also dropped a couple in the beginning, but then made some impressive catches towards the sideline.

7. Lee Evans was used in pretty much all the lineups. They had him work with the 1st unit and the 2nd unit with Travis Brown. He also worked extensively with JP Losman. Evans made some sweet circus catches and also seemed to catch everything thrown to him, including a nice sideline pass with one hand. The best part about him is his speed. He caught a few passes from Losman and took off down the field for the touchdown.

8. Troy Vincent must have gotten his number back at the last minute. They had him in the program listed as #25 and people were cheering for #25 as he walked him, but Pierson Prioleau told everybody they had the wrong guy. Vincent was really solid on the field. He seemed to shut down all the receivers that he covered and stopped Josh Reed from getting a couple passes too.

9. Coy Wire was working with the 2nd unit and it looked like Pierson Prioleau was the one lined up at free safety in the 1st team.

10. The offensive line is pretty much set, except for LG. It looks like they are going to give Marques Sullivan the first chance to take the spot, but Ross Tucker and Ben Sobieski have a shot at it, too. Jim McNally was working with them all day and gave help whenever needed.

11. Another player that intrigued me was FB Luke Lawton. He has some good blocking ability and can also catch the ball out of the backfield. He made a couple nice catches.

12. The only negative that I saw yesterday was that Willis McGahee still had a bandage wrapped around his knee. He also didn’t seem like he had the speed yet. I don’t think it really means a lot; because it makes sense to work him slowly back into the practice. However, it is something to keep an eye on.
